Discover why confidence is the result of action, not a prerequisite. Learn about Albert Bandura’s mastery experience and how to build self-efficacy by doing.

Confidence isn't the fuel that gets you started; it’s the exhaust. It’s what’s left over after you’ve already taken action.
Build me a plan to make Me more confident

The core concept of Confidence as Action is that confidence is not a prerequisite or a starting condition you must have before beginning a task. Instead of being the fuel that gets you started, confidence is actually the 'exhaust' or the byproduct left over after you have already taken action. Waiting to feel ready or certain is often a trap that keeps confidence out of reach, whereas physical engagement with the world allows your brain to update its understanding of your capabilities.
According to psychologist Albert Bandura, the mastery experience is the single most powerful way to build confidence. It is based on the evidence you gather from actually doing things rather than just having intentions or preparing in private. Bandura’s research suggests that your brain updates its internal manual of what you are capable of only when it sees you physically engaging with the world and overcoming challenges through direct experience.
Waiting to feel confident is considered a trap because it assumes that confidence must show up before you do something you are afraid of. In reality, the psychology of confidence shows that the water only 'feels fine' once you are already swimming. By waiting for certainty before sending a pitch or speaking up in a meeting, you prevent the very actions that are required to generate confidence in the first place, effectively keeping your goals out of reach.
