这些石碑是由彭一刚院士设计的，被称为“世纪之门”。这十二块石碑代表了天津大学（北洋大学）120年办历程中的十二个特定时段。石碑背面镌刻着对应时期的历史大事记，从1895年的博文书院到西沽校区、抗战时期的“七星灯火”，再到卫津路和北洋园校区。这种设计将时间轴拉入物理空间，让进入校园的人在行走中感受学校深厚的历史根基。
在北洋园的东西中轴线上，主楼（第三十二教学楼）与郑东图书馆形成了核心的视觉呼应。由崔愷院士设计的主楼在外观上呈现出一个巨大的“圆”形环抱姿态，而位于中轴线另一端的郑东图书馆则呈现出端正的“方”形结构。这种一圆一方的空间布局，是对中国传统哲学中“天圆地方”理念的现代建筑转译。
郑东图书馆由校友周恺设计，其核心理念是借鉴中国传统建筑中以“庭院”为中心的模式，营造出“移步换景”的视觉效果。它不仅是一个存书空间，更是一个功能丰富的文化场所，内部设有学术报告厅、书店、咖啡茶吧等社交区域。此外，该建筑得名于校友郑东的慷慨捐赠，体现了校友文化与建筑美学的结合。
大通学生中心由齐欣设计，坐落在新青年湖的半岛上，其南北两侧采用了截然不同的设计语言。面向教学区的北侧墙面沿用了校园通用的红砖，显得严谨规整，与整体校园环境保持协调；而靠近湖区的南侧则采用了大量玻璃和开放式设计，显得轻盈通透。这种设计将严谨的学风与青春洋溢的自然景观完美融合，体现了“刚柔并济”的特质。
中轴线在中国传统营建中具有“择中而治”的哲学根基，象征着宇宙秩序和礼仪规范。在北洋园这样的现代校园中，中轴线将古代的“权力感”转化为了“学术的尊严”和“历史的连续性”。它作为一条公共文化走廊，通过庄重的空间秩序对学生产生潜移默化的心理暗示，塑造严谨、务实、不偏不倚的性格，实现“环境育人”的目的。
