Explore the dark side of the Roaring Twenties. Learn about Prohibition, industrial alcohol poisoning, and the social tensions hidden behind the Jazz Age glitz.

We tend to look back at the 1920s as this golden age of fun, but it was actually a time of intense social tension, extreme income inequality, and a 'noble experiment' that turned into a nightmare for a lot of Americans.
Imagine the 1920s. Jazz is blaring, flappers are dancing, and the stock market is booming. But behind the glitz and glamour, a dark story was brewing

While the Roaring Twenties are often remembered for jazz, dancing, and economic booms, the era was marked by significant social tension and government-sanctioned dangers. One of the most shocking aspects was the federal government's decision to intentionally add toxins to industrial alcohol during Prohibition. This 'noble experiment' aimed to stop illegal drinking but instead resulted in a nightmare where many Americans were poisoned by the very substances they sought out during this supposedly golden age.
Prohibition transformed the 1920s into a period of intense risk for many citizens. Beyond the rise of illegal champagne and speakeasies, the government began poisoning industrial alcohol to deter consumption, knowing people might still drink it. This policy created a dark reality behind the glitz of the Jazz Age, highlighting a time when the federal government took extreme measures that compromised public safety and contributed to the era's underlying shadows.
Despite the headlines of record highs in the stock market and the introduction of new household conveniences, the 1920s suffered from extreme income inequality. While some enjoyed the ultimate party in places like New York City in 1926, others faced a different reality characterized by social tension and economic hardship. This contrast between the booming economy and the struggles of the working class is a major part of the true history of the Roaring Twenties.
