De plus, le phénomène du "paradoxe d'Anderson" montre que même avec un diplôme plus élevé que celui de leurs parents, de nombreux jeunes subissent un déclassement car la valeur des titres scolaires diminue sur un marché du travail saturé.
La France utilise un système de redistribution très actif qui combine des prélèvements obligatoires (impôts et cotisations) et des prestations sociales (RSA, allocations, retraites). Ce mécanisme permet de réduire considérablement les écarts : alors que le rapport entre les 10 % les plus riches et les 10 % les plus pauvres est de 1 à 14 si l'on regarde les revenus primaires, il tombe à environ 3,4 après redistribution. Toutefois, ce système est aujourd'hui mis au défi par l'émergence de la "gig economy" et des travailleurs de plateformes qui échappent souvent aux protections sociales classiques.
