    La nomenclature des Professions et Catégories Socioprofessionnelles (PCS) est l'outil statistique utilisé pour classer la population française en groupes hiérarchisés. Elle ne se base pas uniquement sur le revenu, mais croise plusieurs critères comme le métier, le niveau de qualification, le statut (salarié ou indépendant) et la position hiérarchique. Cette classification permet de mettre en lumière des disparités profondes dans les conditions de vie, l'accès au logement ou même l'espérance de vie, qui varie par exemple de six ans entre les catégories les plus aisées et les plus modestes.

    Karl Marx propose une vision réaliste et conflictuelle où la classe sociale est définie par la possession ou non des moyens de production, menant inévitablement à une lutte des classes entre la bourgeoisie et le prolétariat. À l'inverse, Max Weber adopte une approche multidimensionnelle et plus fluide. Selon lui, la stratification ne dépend pas seulement de l'économie (la richesse), mais aussi de l'ordre social (le prestige) et de l'ordre politique (le pouvoir). Là où Marx voit des blocs soudés par une conscience de classe, Weber voit des strates superposées où les individus n'agissent pas forcément de manière collective.

    Bien que le système républicain valorise le mérite, la reproduction sociale reste la règle dominante en raison du poids du capital culturel. Comme l'expliquait Pierre Bourdieu, l'école a tendance à valider les codes et les références des classes dominantes, transformant un héritage familial en réussite scolaire. De plus, le phénomène du "paradoxe d'Anderson" montre que même avec un diplôme plus élevé que celui de leurs parents, de nombreux jeunes subissent un déclassement car la valeur des titres scolaires diminue sur un marché du travail saturé.

    La France utilise un système de redistribution très actif qui combine des prélèvements obligatoires (impôts et cotisations) et des prestations sociales (RSA, allocations, retraites). Ce mécanisme permet de réduire considérablement les écarts : alors que le rapport entre les 10 % les plus riches et les 10 % les plus pauvres est de 1 à 14 si l'on regarde les revenus primaires, il tombe à environ 3,4 après redistribution. Toutefois, ce système est aujourd'hui mis au défi par l'émergence de la "gig economy" et des travailleurs de plateformes qui échappent souvent aux protections sociales classiques.

    La société française a connu quatre mutations majeures : la salarisation (plus de 90 % des actifs sont désormais salariés), la tertiarisation (basculement des emplois vers les services au détriment de l'industrie et de l'agriculture), la féminisation massive du marché du travail et la hausse généralisée des qualifications. Ces transformations ont modifié les modes de vie mais ont aussi créé une polarisation du travail, où les emplois intermédiaires disparaissent au profit de postes soit très qualifiés, soit très précaires.
