    Ces deux outils sociologiques permettent d'analyser la mobilité sociale sous des angles différents. La table de destinée part du passé pour regarder l'avenir : elle prend un groupe (par exemple, 100 fils d'ouvriers) et examine ce qu'ils sont devenus professionnellement. À l'inverse, la table de recrutement part du présent pour remonter aux origines : elle prend un groupe actuel (par exemple, 100 cadres) et analyse de quelle catégorie sociale ils sont issus.

    Le paradoxe d'Anderson décrit une situation où un enfant possède un diplôme plus élevé que celui de son parent, mais occupe pourtant une position sociale inférieure ou identique. Ce phénomène s'explique par la massification scolaire : comme le nombre de diplômés a explosé, la valeur des titres sur le marché du travail a diminué. Aujourd'hui, il faut souvent un niveau d'études plus élevé que par le passé pour accéder au même type de poste.

    Le parcours des femmes est marqué par un contraste fort. Si elles connaissent une ascension fulgurante par rapport à leurs mères, elles restent désavantagées par rapport à leurs pères. Malgré de meilleurs résultats scolaires, elles font face à un plafond de verre dû à l'orientation vers des filières moins rémunératrices (soin, éducation), aux interruptions de carrière pour raisons familiales et à une exposition plus forte à la mobilité descendante ou au déclassement.

    Le lieu de résidence constitue une véritable « loterie géographique ». Les grandes métropoles, particulièrement l'Île-de-France, agissent comme des machines à mobilité car elles concentrent les universités, les sièges sociaux et les réseaux professionnels. À l'inverse, naître dans un territoire moins dynamique économiquement constitue un frein, car la mobilité ascendante nécessite souvent une mobilité géographique coûteuse que tout le monde ne peut pas s'offrir.
