They seem both abstract and intensely biographical, representing Beethoven's "late style" that many contemporaries attributed to illness or eccentricity, but which later generations would recognize as profound innovation. Between 1825 and 1826, Beethoven composed five string quartets, beginning with three commissioned by Prince Galitzin (opp. 127, 132, and 130), followed by two more (opp. 131 and 135). These works broke conventional structures-op. 130 has six movements, op. 131 seven, op. 132 five-and featured unusual annotations, like the famous "Muss es sein?" ("Must it be?") and "Es muss sein!" ("It must be!") in op. 135. Op. 130 plays masterfully with the concept of ending throughout its unusual six-movement structure. The second movement (Presto) ends almost arbitrarily, while the third begins with a diminuendo, as if fading before it's begun, yet is marked "poco scherzoso" (a little playfully). The Cavatina movement evokes a fragile singing voice, with a section marked "Beklemmt" (feeling oppressed or anxious) where the violin's melodic line breaks into short, erratic phrases. Beethoven was known to weep when hearing this movement. The original finale, the monumental "Grosse Fuge," functions as both an ending to op. 130 and the apotheosis of the fugue genre. Marked "tantot libre, tantot recherche" (partly free, partly learned), it alternates strict fugal sections with lyrical, dance-like passages, using extreme dynamics and dissonance that made it nearly incomprehensible to early audiences. The premiere of op. 130 on March 21, 1826, featured a conventional mixed program rather than showcasing the quartet alone. Critics compared the finale to "Chinese" language, suggesting it created "Babylonian confusion" that "Moroccans might possibly enjoy." Beethoven's final days in Vienna were marked by declining health and family troubles. On August 5, 1826, his nephew Karl attempted suicide, shooting himself in the head after years of conflict with his controlling uncle. Though not fatal, his wounds revealed his desperation to escape his uncle's "imprisonment" and constant denigration of his mother. This horrific event finally persuaded Beethoven to relinquish guardianship and allow Karl to join the army. For Karl's convalescence, Beethoven accepted his brother Johann's invitation to stay at his country house in Gneixendorf. Despite his ailments, Beethoven thrived in the Danube valley, which reminded him of his childhood Rhineland. He composed in mornings and evenings, completing op. 135 by mid-October and then turning to the new finale for op. 130, which he sent to Artaria in mid-November. Beethoven's death on March 26, 1827, followed months of illness. His funeral three days later drew massive crowds, with prominent musicians serving as pallbearers, including Hummel, Czerny, and Schubert. Playwright Franz Grillparzer's funeral oration declared Beethoven "the last master of resounding song" who had "inherited and increased the immortal fame of Handel and Bach, of Haydn and Mozart." He emphasized three themes that still dominate Beethoven's legacy: his culmination of Vienna's musical tradition, his isolation, and his universality.
