Fyodor Dostoevsky

출생: November 11, 1821 – Moscow, Russia

Fyodor Dostoevsky was a Russian novelist, short story writer, and essayist whose works delve into psychology, philosophy, and the complexities of the human condition. Renowned for masterpieces such as Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, and The Brothers Karamazov, his works have been translated into more than 170 languages and profoundly influenced world literature.

전기 및 작가의 여정

Fyodor Dostoevsky was born in Moscow in 1821, the son of a doctor in a middle-class, religious household. Early exposure to literature and the pious temperament of his mother shaped Dostoevsky’s lifelong preoccupation with questions of faith and morality. His mother’s death when he was 15, followed by his father’s violent demise, were traumatic events that marked his adolescence and contributed to the psychological intensity of his later work. He attended the Nikolayev Military Engineering Institute in St. Petersburg, but after graduating as a lieutenant engineer, he quickly abandoned the technical path to pursue literature, debuting with the epistolary novel Poor Folk in 1846, which gained him immediate recognition in the Russian literary scene.

Above all, don't lie to yourself. The man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to a point that he cannot distinguish the truth within him, or around him, and so loses all respect for himself and for others. And having no respect he ceases to love
-The Brothers Karamazov
quote
Pain and suffering are always inevitable for a large intelligence and a deep heart. The really great men must, I think, have great sadness on earth
-Crime and Punishment
quote
What is hell? I maintain that it is the suffering of being unable to love
-The Brothers Karamazov

To go wrong in one's own way is better than to go right in someone else's
-Crime and Punishment

I say let the world go to hell, but I should always have my tea
-Notes from Underground
quote
But how could you live and have no story to tell?
-White Nights
quote
Man only likes to count his troubles; he doesn't calculate his happiness
-Notes from Underground
quote
The mystery of human existence lies not in just staying alive, but in finding something to live for
