Social media has become as addictive as crack-immediately gratifying and deeply habit-forming. Mobile devices deliver constant streams of information and interaction, and the more people consume, the more they crave. This addiction is transforming how consumers want to interact with brands, even when they're not actively on social platforms.
The marketing landscape has undergone a seismic shift. What was once neatly divided into traditional, digital, and social categories has blurred as social media cannibalizes both traditional and digital media. Email, banner ads, and SEO are losing effectiveness unless they incorporate social elements. The speed of adoption is staggering-radio took 38 years to reach 50 million users; Instagram took just 18 months.
Most businesses haven't adapted to this new reality. While they've established social media presences, they're still not executing properly. Many invest only 1% of ad budgets in mobile despite consumers spending 10% of their time there. Worse, they lazily repurpose content across platforms without respecting each platform's unique language-like tourists who haven't bothered to learn Norwegian while visiting Oslo.
Smart entrepreneurs approach new platforms with curiosity and respect, asking "How can I do better?" rather than dismissing them. A great marketing story sells by creating emotion that drives consumer action. Whether you're selling mobile subscriptions, theme park visits, or donations, your story must not just attract attention but convert. On social media, this requires native content.
Native content mimics what makes a platform valuable to consumers-its aesthetics, design, and tone-while offering the same value as other content people seek there. Just as email marketing worked in the 1990s because people were already using email, social media marketing works when you tell your story natively on platforms where consumers spend time.
There's no fixed blueprint for social storytelling-it's a "sweet science" requiring constant experimentation and observation. Successful marketers analyze variables like timing, language choices, image effectiveness, and hashtag impact, using platform analytics to measure engagement.
Each platform has its unique language, culture, and style. Content must mirror what audiences are already coming to the platform to see. Television ads only became effective once marketers created short, scene-driven stories with evocative characters that became intrinsic to the viewing experience. People hummed jingles throughout their day, and products flew off shelves.
Content is king, but context is God. Good content that ignores platform context falls flat because marketers are there to sell while consumers seek value-entertainment, information, connection, or social status. Native content seamlessly blends with the platform's offerings, engaging consumers emotionally without obvious selling.
Traditional ads like the Marlboro Man or Keebler Elves were designed to entertain and evoke feelings that would drive purchases, but they were still intrusions that interrupted programming. Today's consumers have no patience for interruptions, as evidenced by their quick adoption of commercial-skipping technology.
Modern marketers must become the entertainment rather than interrupt it. We need to meld seamlessly into whatever experience people are seeking on their preferred platforms-whether entertainment, news, social connection, or design. This creates an emotional connection that makes consumers more likely to purchase from brands they believe understand and represent their values.
Beyond making content simple, memorable, inviting, and fun, I add: Make it for your customer, not yourself. Be generous, informative, funny, and inspiring-all qualities we enjoy in other humans.
Jabs should align with what people value most, as evidenced by their phone screens: social connections, entertainment/escape, and utility/service. A cosmetics company might provide utility through makeup tutorials, entertainment through music trends and celebrity makeup breakdowns, and human connection by joining conversations about beauty topics or even unrelated interests their audience shares.
When delivering native content, consumers might briefly realize a brand (not an individual) is telling the story, but if your content is valuable, they'll appreciate it. Like a child who helps their mother before asking for ice cream, brands that give generously create emotional connections that make consumers feel obligated to reciprocate when you finally ask for the sale.
Generations are defined by their pop culture-from soda fountains and records to smartphones and downloads. Today, everyone consumes culture via their phones, and your content must compete with everything else in that stream.
Rather than fighting this reality, join it. Show your audience you love the same music they do. Demonstrate understanding of the celebrities, gossip, issues and news that matter to them. The days of interrupting people with ads are diminishing or over. Instead, integrate your content into their cultural stream, where it can be consumed alongside all their other "pop culture candy."
Stop thinking about content and start thinking about micro-content-tiny, unique nuggets of information, humor, commentary or inspiration reimagined constantly in response to current culture, conversations and events in a platform's native language.
Oreo exemplified this during the 2013 Super Bowl power outage with their tweet "Power Out? No problem" showing a lone Oreo with text "You can still dunk in the dark." This was only possible because Oreo had a social media team ready to respond in real-time, perfectly aligning with their playful brand identity.
Though your micro-content will vary daily, it must consistently answer "Who are we?" Your core story and brand identity must remain constant across all platforms, even as you adapt to different contexts.
Self-awareness means knowing your message and keeping it consistent in every setting-just as you'd naturally wear different outfits and use different vocabulary when having tea with your grandmother versus partying with friends. Creating platform-appropriate micro-content is your brand's best chance of being noticed in our increasingly busy, disjointed, ADD world.

Facebook has become the biggest, most accepted social network with over a billion monthly active users-so massive that one out of every five page views in the United States happens on Facebook. Yet despite its widespread acceptance as a legitimate marketing tool, most brands still don't truly understand how to use it effectively.
The key to great marketing is remembering that your brand matters to you, but your customer cares about their own interests. Like dating, you need to learn what interests the other person and direct conversation accordingly. For a boot company, this means creating content about weather, rock climbing, or concerts-topics related to boots. But it also means creating content about popular TV shows your audience loves, like "30 Rock," even when it seems off-brand.
These "jabs" connect with your community by showing you understand them. When you post content that generates engagement, Facebook's algorithms recognize your brand matters to people, improving your visibility when you eventually post content that might lead to sales. The strategy is to give generously and entertain customers, building engagement through multiple jabs before attempting a right hook (sales pitch).
Facebook allows marketers to be extremely selective, customizing content for specific demographic subsets. While targeting is useful for jabs, it's essential for right hooks. A national retailer can create different Black Friday promotions-one featuring a purse targeted at 25-35 year old women, another aimed at 55-year-old male customers framed as a gift suggestion for daughters. Content can even be customized by geography, creating state-shaped promotions for regions with strong local pride. This precise targeting ensures content resonates with each audience's emotional center, dramatically improving engagement rates.
Facebook marketing offers remarkable cost-efficiency compared to traditional advertising. While television requires weeks of lead time, substantial budgets ($7,000-$13,000 for a two-week campaign), and provides minimal feedback, Facebook allows instant deployment of targeted content with real-time performance metrics.
As mobile usage grows, traditional Facebook ads are becoming obsolete. With no room for right-side ads on smartphones, marketers must adapt to mobile-first strategies. Interestingly, on Twitter, context often matters more than content. While Twitter is evolving with visual enhancements like Vine and Twitter Cards, most marketers still misuse it as merely an extension of their blog or a place to brag through "birdiebrags" (retweeting favorable mentions). Twitter rewards those who listen and give, not those who ask and take. The platform's true power lies in engagement and community management-it's the internet's cocktail party where listening well delivers tremendous benefits.
While Facebook trades in friendship, Twitter's currency is news and information. Your tweets about products or services are tiny drops in an information deluge. The only way to differentiate yourself is through unique context-not by breaking news but by "deejaying" it. Success comes not from spreading information but from skillfully spinning, interpreting, and remixing it in your signature style. A marketer who can do this tells stories more powerful and memorable than the actual news itself. Rather than tweeting basic facts with links, add personality and provocation. Twitter's power lies in allowing you to initiate relationships with customers without permission-you can use Twitter's search engine to find people discussing topics related to your business and engage them with your perspective, humor, and context. Think beyond obvious keywords to find creative engagement opportunities with potential customers who would love you if they only knew you existed.
Twitter's trend-tracking ability is one of social media's most powerful yet underused tools. Learning to create content around trending topics gives you tremendous power to reach beyond your core followers. You can tailor content to any situation, spark interest among new audiences, and scale your caring. Best of all, you can piggyback on existing conversations, giving you a reprieve from constantly creating fresh content. The key is finding unexpected connections between trends and your brand. When TV show 30 Rock aired its finale and trended on Twitter, brands like 7 For All Mankind (nicknamed "sevens") missed a perfect opportunity to connect with the show's seven-year run. Ignoring cultural conversations outside your industry bubble limits your reach-consumers don't live in bubbles, so why should brands?
Small businesses can gain an edge over larger companies by being nimble and authentic on Twitter. Green Mountain Coffee exemplifies this approach by engaging with consumers beyond their product space. When Levi Lentz tweeted about loving Michael Franti's song, Green Mountain responded conversationally, eventually sending him a CD and coffee samples after learning he was new to coffee. Pinterest appeals to our fundamental human desire to collect, display and symbolize who we are-or who we aspire to be. While our real lives may be cluttered and imperfect, Pinterest allows us to curate idealized versions of ourselves through visual collections. This platform taps into two powerful human drivers: aspiration and acquisition. The numbers prove its effectiveness-between 2011 and 2012, Pinterest's share of social-media-driven revenue for e-retailers jumped from 1% to 17%, with some small businesses seeing up to 60% revenue increases after early Pinterest experimentation.
Every Pinterest pin must be visually compelling-think of your content as collector's items that invite clicks. Beyond creating simple category boards (like "Green Tea" or "Black Tea" for a tea shop), successful brands create context through creative board names like "Tea You Drink After a Bad Date" or "Tea for Handling the In-Laws." Comments also give brands opportunities to respond to feedback, whether addressing criticism or explaining products.
Pinterest's etiquette mirrors real-world business principles: be nice, show you care, display your products attractively, share knowledge generously, be truthful, and help customers find what they need. Use every customer interaction to tell your brand story-then throw your right hook with everything you've got.

Instagram is a visual-centric social network with "baked-in utility" for taking better mobile photos, but presents unique challenges for marketers. Despite these limitations, brands should embrace Instagram for its massive scale (130 million monthly active users adding 40 million photos daily) and low-cost exposure. Like magazine advertising, Instagram offers access to a dedicated audience through beautiful imagery, with the added benefits of interactivity through likes and comments. While primarily a jabbing platform for brand storytelling and impression-building, creative right hooks are possible by including URLs in descriptions or offering Instagram-specific discount codes.
Instagram success requires authenticity, not commercialism. Create artistic, native content that expresses your brand genuinely. Recognize Instagram as your gateway to the next generation of social users, with Facebook's acquisition proving the platform's value. Use hashtags liberally-unlike Twitter, you can't overuse them on Instagram; they're essential doorways for discovery. Place them in comments if you prefer cleaner posts. Aim for the coveted Explore page by creating exceptionally beautiful, evocative content that generates significant engagement, though this remains challenging for most businesses.
Ben & Jerry's excels on Instagram with minimalist, visually striking content that lets their colorful product shine without needing logos. Their strategy of highlighting fan-submitted content-like reposting a Swedish fan's snack preparation photo after requesting permission-demonstrates authentic community engagement. This approach perfectly aligns with Instagram's ethos while building brand affinity through user recognition.
GAP demonstrates true social media savvy by featuring user-generated content-specifically, a fan's GAP-logo pumpkin carving discovered through hashtag monitoring. By reaching out to the creator for permission to share, GAP shows it understands Instagram's community-driven nature. Their timely use of holiday-themed content from an authentic source generated high engagement while reinforcing the human connection behind the brand.
The Meatball Shop brilliantly overcame Instagram's linking limitations with a compelling call-to-action campaign for National Meatball Day. They posted an authentic photo with a hashtag contest inviting followers to share their favorite meatball moments for a chance to be featured and win a branded hat. This gamification strategy generated approximately 1% engagement-impressive for a small business-while building brand awareness through a well-executed right hook that worked within Instagram's constraints.

While Facebook remains our "dining room" for social entertainment, LinkedIn will be our "library" where deals get done. The platform is evolving from a networking tool to a professional content hub through features like LinkedIn Influencers. Its business orientation provides natural advantages for B2B marketers who haven't found traction on Facebook. The platform allows for longer-form content aimed at information-hungry professionals looking for jobs, connections, or edges. Content should be tailored specifically for LinkedIn's environment-perhaps more serious and thoughtful than on other networks, though still maintaining brand voice.
Vine's six-second video limitation has sparked incredible storytelling creativity. Launched in January 2013 and quickly acquiring 13 million users by June, Vine's format addresses a key viewer hesitation-not knowing whether clicking a video means committing to ten seconds or ten minutes. The six-second promise encourages more views, creating opportunities for marketers with the right skills. The platform's brevity perfectly suits modern consumers seeking dopamine hits in minimal time, leading to addictive viewing patterns. Brands need to prioritize mastering Vine, as it could do to YouTube what Twitter did to Facebook. Importantly, consumers share branded Vine videos four times more often than regular internet videos. The key to success is using edits and cuts rather than static six-second shots to build rhythm and tell compelling stories.
Despite being initially dismissed as a sexting platform after its 2011 launch, Snapchat has evolved into a channel primarily for visual gags and jokes rather than inappropriate content. With 60 million daily "snaps" by February 2013, it serves a world that can't tolerate boredom and craves constant content creation. Remember though, social media is a never-ending boxing match; even established brands with substantial equity must maintain their engagement efforts or risk getting knocked out.

As brands push traditional boundaries and recognize they can own rather than rent media, many will become media companies themselves. In the future, Nike could compete with ESPN, Amtrak with Travel + Leisure, or Burberry with the Robb Report. With low startup costs and transparent branding (so consumers understand the source), this approach could effectively expand brand reach. While older demographics might be skeptical, the under-thirty audience-raised in an era of transparency-understands this is the future. In the marketing world, the separation between "church and state" will soon disappear, unleashing exciting innovation as brands become major media players.
The ever-evolving social media landscape was perfectly illustrated when Instagram launched 15-second videos just days before this book's manuscript deadline. This constant change defines our modern marketing world-unlike Don Draper's era where nothing changed for decades. Today's marketers must continuously adapt to new platforms and technologies without self-pity or nostalgia. Video for Instagram is merely the latest evolution, with Google Glass soon requiring us to master storytelling on eye-level screens. The fundamental challenge remains consistent: remembering to give value repeatedly before asking for anything in return. Early platform adopters consistently gain advantage-those who dominated Instagram and Pinterest weren't necessarily Facebook or Twitter stars, they simply arrived first and mastered the platforms before others.
