Vaclav Smil

Nato: December 9, 1943 – Plzeň, Bohemia, German Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia

Vaclav Smil is a Czech-Canadian scientist and author specializing in energy, environmental change, food production, technical innovation, and public policy. A Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of Manitoba, he has published over forty books, including the influential How the World Really Works. His work has shaped global discussions on energy and sustainability.

Biografia e Percorso dell'Autore

Vaclav Smil, born in 1943 in Plzeň, in what was then the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia (now the Czech Republic), emerged from modest beginnings shaped by the realities of postwar Eastern Europe. His father served as a police officer before moving into manufacturing, while his mother managed the accounting for a hospital kitchen. Growing up in a remote mountain town, Smil spent countless hours chopping wood to keep his home heated, instilling in him an early sensitivity to the question of energy—how it is consumed and its implications for daily life. His intellectual journey formally began at Charles University in Prague, where he pursued natural sciences with vigor, taking dozens of courses each year and absorbing a holistic view of nature. The limitations imposed by the communist regime, particularly his refusal to join the Party, curtailed local prospects, prompting Smil and his wife, Eva, to emigrate to the United States in 1969 after the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia—an exodus that narrowly preceded a long-standing travel ban.
