Ram Charan was born in 1939 in the small town of Tappal in Uttar Pradesh, India, as one of seven children in a family of modest means. His early years were marked by poverty and a strong work ethic, shaped by helping at his father’s shoe shop. Driven by academic excellence, he earned an engineering degree from Banaras Hindu University before embarking on a formative work exchange in Australia, an opportunity made possible by his grandmother’s sacrifice. Charan’s potential was soon recognized, prompting him to pursue an MBA and doctorate at Harvard Business School, where he graduated as a Baker Scholar. He spent several years teaching at Harvard, the Kellogg School of Management, and Boston University before moving decisively from academia into practical consulting.
