Barack Obama is an American political memoirist, public thinker, and former president whose writing centers on identity, democracy, and civic leadership. His notable books include Dreams from My Father, The Audacity of Hope, and A Promised Land. He served as the 44th U.S. president and received the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize.
Barack Obama’s path as a writer and public figure began in a life shaped by movement, study, and civic work rather than by literary institutions alone. Born in Honolulu on August 4, 1961, to a Kenyan father and a mother from Kansas, he came of age with an unusually broad sense of America and belonging. He attended Occidental College, graduated from Columbia University in 1983, and then moved to Chicago, where his work as a community organizer on the South Side became the first major turning point in his adult life. That experience linked biography to public service. He later entered Harvard Law School, where he became the first Black president of the Harvard Law Review, then returned to Chicago to teach constitutional law and remain active in community and voter-registration work.
