Mitch Albom, born in Passaic, New Jersey, in 1958, grew up in Oaklyn near Philadelphia, the middle of three children. His early years were marked by an inclination toward the arts, especially music; he taught himself piano and played in bands during adolescence. After skipping his senior year of high school, he attended Brandeis University, earning a degree in sociology in 1979. While at Brandeis, Albom was profoundly influenced by his professor Morrie Schwartz, a relationship that would later define his most iconic work. Following graduation, he initially pursued a life in music, performing in both the U.S. and Europe, before gravitating toward journalism. To bolster his career prospects, he earned master’s degrees in journalism and business from Columbia University, supporting himself with jobs as a musician and babysitter.
