Albert Woodfox (1947–2022) était un militant de renom, auteur et membre des « Angola Three », dont les mémoires intitulés Solitary relatent sa survie pendant 44 ans à l'isolement cellulaire — la plus longue période enregistrée dans l'histoire des États-Unis.

Originaire de la Nouvelle-Orléans, Woodfox est devenu un organisateur des Black Panthers pendant son incarcération, défendant les droits des prisonniers et une réforme systémique à travers des programmes d'alphabétisation et d'éducation politique. Ses mémoires, finalistes du National Book Award et du prix Pulitzer, mêlent récit personnel et critiques cinglantes de l'incarcération de masse et de l'injustice raciale.

L'autorité de Woodfox découlait de son expérience directe : après sa libération en 2016, il est devenu un conférencier international dans des institutions telles que Harvard, Yale et lors de forums d'Amnesty International à travers l'Europe.
