Marlen Haushofer (1920-1970) était une auteure autrichienne et l'écrivaine du roman Le Mur invisible, un roman dystopique pionnier explorant les thèmes de l'isolement, de la survie et du lien profond de l'humanité avec la nature. Née Marie Helene Frauendorfer en Haute-Autriche, Haushofer a étudié la littérature allemande à Vienne et à Graz avant de commencer sa carrière littéraire en 1946.

Elle écrivait tout en gérant les tâches ménagères et en travaillant dans le cabinet dentaire de son mari, composant lors de moments volés qu'elle décrivait comme « écrire en l'air ». Le Mur invisible, publié en 1963 et considéré comme son plus grand accomplissement, a été méticuleusement écrit quatre fois à la main entre 1960 et 1963.

Son style introspectif et son exploration sans faille de l'expérience féminine ont également façonné des œuvres notables, notamment Une poignée de vie, Le Mansarde et Nous avons tué Stella. L'approche philosophique de Haushofer sur les thèmes existentiels lui a valu de nombreux prix littéraires autrichiens et a profondément influencé des écrivains ultérieurs, dont la lauréate du prix Nobel Elfriede Jelinek, qui lui a dédié l'une de ses pièces.
