René Descartes is widely recognized as the Father of Modern Philosophy. Living in the early 1600s, he sought to move away from traditional Aristotelian explanations of the world, which he believed were built on shaky foundations. Descartes aimed to establish a revolutionary philosophical system by finding a truth so solid it could never be shaken, effectively resetting how we understand the human mind and the sciences.
Methodological doubt is a process where Descartes decided to delete every belief he held to see what truths remained. He realized that the senses can be deceptive, noting how a square tower might appear round from a distance. By questioning everything that could possibly be doubted, including the reliability of his own senses, he hoped to discover a foundation of absolute certainty for his philosophical system.
The 'evil genius' or 'deceiver' is a thought experiment used by Descartes to push his doubt to the extreme. He wondered if an external force could be tricking him into believing basic truths, such as mathematical equations like two plus three equaling five, even if they were false. This radical skepticism was part of his effort to strip away all uncertain beliefs and find a truth that was impossible to deny.
Descartes lived during a time when the old ways of explaining the world through Aristotelian forms and purposes were beginning to crumble. He saw that the sciences of his era lacked a firm basis, leading him to pursue a complete intellectual reset. By moving away from these outdated models, Descartes helped establish the field of epistemology and paved the way for modern philosophical thought.
