René Descartes (1596–1650) fue un filósofo y matemático francés, y una figura fundacional de la filosofía moderna. Fue autor de Meditaciones metafísicas, una piedra angular de la investigación epistemológica y del dualismo metafísico.

Pionero del pensamiento racionalista, Descartes combinó el rigor científico con el escepticismo filosófico, afirmando célebremente Cogito, ergo sum (“Pienso, luego existo”) en su obra anterior Discurso del método.
