Freedom isn't an abstract value but an institutionalized cultural practice shaping our will, choice, and emotions. The modern architecture of choice presupposes numerous potential partners and freedom to choose based on volition and emotion. However, this freedom becomes aporetic-in its realized form, it leads to an incapacity or lack of desire to exercise choice. We've moved from struggling for freedom to experiencing difficulty choosing, even claiming the right not to choose. Modern love paradoxically shows cooling emotionality while becoming more crucial to self-worth determination. Love is now a social foundation for the self, yet cultural resources making it constitutive of selfhood have been depleted. This demands ethics' urgent return to sexual and emotional relations. The state of indecisiveness about what we love-caused by abundant choice, difficulty knowing emotions through self-scrutiny, and autonomy ideals-prevents passionate commitment and obscures identity. Feminism must respond analytically and normatively: given women's continued investment in romantic love and participation in open sexual fields, the accumulation of sexual capital must be questioned to devise strategies addressing emotional inequalities. As Jonathan Franzen notes, "pain hurts but doesn't kill," and avoiding pain through "an anesthetized dream of self-sufficiency" means not truly living. Perhaps by understanding the social forces shaping our romantic lives, we can begin to reclaim the capacity for passionate commitment while preserving the genuine gains of freedom and equality-finding a way to love deeply without surrendering our hard-won autonomy.
