Stephen Chbosky es el autor superventas de Las ventajas de ser un marginado (o Las ventajas de ser invisible) y un aclamado guionista y director de cine conocido por sus historias de iniciación emocionalmente resonantes. Nacido en Pittsburgh, Pensilvania, en 1970, Chbosky se basó en sus propias experiencias adolescentes e influencias como El guardián entre el centeno de J.D. Salinger para elaborar esta novela epistolar semiautobiográfica que explora temas de identidad, salud mental, sexualidad, amistad y trauma.

Graduado del programa de Escritura Cinematográfica de la Universidad del Sur de California, Chbosky no solo escribió la novela, sino que también adaptó y dirigió la aclamada adaptación cinematográfica de 2012 protagonizada por Logan Lerman y Emma Watson.
