Happiness isn't a permanent state but a shifting landscape we visit periodically. There's no formula that guarantees happiness, as it results from a complex mix of genetics, circumstances, and our own actions. Even following every piece of advice in this book won't guarantee perpetual happiness. Our genetic makeup and adverse circumstances can keep happiness at bay. Martin Seligman discovered that simply removing sadness doesn't create happiness but emptiness. Happiness and sadness aren't opposites but complementary experiences. As Carl Jung noted, "happy" would lose meaning without sadness as counterbalance. Perhaps surprisingly for authors of "The Happy Lawyer," we acknowledge that happiness isn't everything. For most of human history, survival, not happiness, was the primary concern. Philosophers focused on virtue, honor and loyalty rather than happiness. Religious texts rarely emphasize happiness as a primary goal. As Thomas Jefferson observed, "Perfect happiness... was never intended by the Deity to be the lot of his creatures." You move toward happier ground by first opening yourself to the possibility of becoming a happier lawyer. Don't force it-as John Stuart Mill noted, "Happiness should be approached sideways like a crab." Obsessing about unhappiness takes you out of the present moment where happiness actually resides. Does your work interest and appropriately challenge you? If you're bored by filling out the same forms or making the same arguments repeatedly, explore changing departments, clients, or your approach to assignments. Law offers many challenges-seek them out. First understand your own competencies, then find ways to use your strengths. The closer your values align with your work, the happier you'll feel. Even boring work has benefits when consistent with your values. When asked about peak experiences, lawyers repeatedly mentioned cases where they believed their work made a difference. When conflict arises between what your head and heart tell you to do, listen to your heart. Control over work-life balance stands above other aspects of control for lawyer satisfaction. If you feel good about the balance between work obligations and commitments to others (family, friends, self), you'll likely feel better about your job. If your current position makes such balance impossible, do something about it. Don't postpone happiness-children grow quickly, athletic abilities fade, and friendships require attention. "Social embeddedness" is the single best predictor of happiness. Your workplace relationships are crucial to finding greater satisfaction. Trust-a small word with enormous meaning-is fundamental. The inability to trust undermines happiness as surely as the capacity to trust promotes it. As psychiatrist George Valliant concluded from his seventy-year longitudinal study of Harvard graduates: "The only thing that really matters in life is your relationships to other people." Ben Franklin urged finding happiness in "the little advantages" of daily life. Almost all lawyers experience some job aspects that bring pleasure-strategizing with colleagues, outlining briefs, or clearing tasks from your inbox. Recognize these moments through self-study, as we're not all naturally attuned to what gives us genuine pleasure. After researching countless opinions on happiness, we've concluded that love makes us happier than anything else. Not necessarily romantic love, but the love inherent in being attentive-caring deeply about somebody or something, whether justice, a cause, or the life of the mind. British scholar Avner Offer puts it concisely: "Attention is the universal currency of well-being." Like any relationship, your connection to your work will have tensions and difficult days. But as long as your work holds your attention-as long as you can love it-there's more than just hope for being a happy lawyer.
