The age gap between spouses has narrowed to historic lows, with over one-third of women aged 35-44 living with younger men by the late 1990s. Low-income women often avoid marriage not because they devalue it, but because they see it as something to work toward when financially stable. Unlike in the past when women needed husbands for economic support, today's low-income women often view financially unstable partners as economic liabilities. "I don't need a husband to help me scrape by," one welfare recipient explained. "Find me a man who's got a steady job and a mortgage and no jail time in his past, and I'll marry him pretty damn quick." Contrary to conventional wisdom, women are more likely than men to initiate divorce, with two-thirds of divorces after age forty initiated by wives. While historically educated women with higher earnings were most likely to leave marriages, today women at all socioeconomic levels can better support themselves. Interestingly, college-educated couples now have more stable marriages than less-educated ones, reversing previous patterns. The differences within various family arrangements today are often greater than differences between categories. Male breadwinner families persist but have transformed dramatically-now concentrated among the poorest 25 percent and richest 5 percent of households, with vastly different dynamics. In wealthy families, stay-at-home wives often contribute significant social capital and cultural knowledge, while in low-income families, wives frequently stay home because childcare and transportation costs would exceed potential earnings. Gender attitudes create fascinating paradoxes in marriage outcomes. While some men seek traditionally-minded wives from abroad who won't "threaten with divorce when they don't get their way," most American men no longer want subservient partners. There's growing convergence between men and women in valuing mutual respect, fidelity, honesty and shared responsibilities. The democratization of marriage has made it simultaneously more fulfilling and more fragile. When couples must negotiate rather than husbands simply imposing their will, negotiations can break down. When both partners have equally important career trajectories, even loving couples may part ways. While marriage will never again be as universal or stable as when it was the only viable option, it has become more fair, more fulfilling, and more effective at fostering well-being than ever before in history. A successful modern marriage offers remarkable benefits-it's more appealing than in the past without husbands' right to abuse wives, rigid sexual double standards, or sacrifice of children's education. Married people are generally happier, healthier and better protected against economic setbacks. However, the very freedoms that make modern marriage potentially satisfying also make unsatisfying marriages less bearable. For better or worse, we must adjust our personal expectations and social support systems to this new reality where marriage is no longer society's primary source of commitment and caregiving. Good marriages today require friendship, mutual respect, and negotiation rather than rigid rules. Partners must accept differences without putting up with mistreatment. Unlike earlier generations whose diaries showed resignation to their "lot" in marriage, modern couples make conscious choices to stay together and work through problems, though this brings an undercurrent of anxiety about potential separation.
