Unlike voluntary associations, nations command moral grandeur through this perceived purity. Language plays a crucial role in creating national consciousness through its primordial quality, its connection to the dead, and its ability to create experiences of simultaneity through shared songs and poetry. Colonial racism emerged from two converging forces: official nationalism's attempt to weld dynastic legitimacy with national community, and the opportunity for middle-class colonizers to play aristocrat abroad. The colonial empire allowed bourgeois Europeans to adopt feudal-aristocratic postures impossible at home, creating what Anderson calls "tropical Gothic." This pseudo-aristocratic character of colonialism manifested in the trans-state "solidarity among whites" that mirrored aristocratic class solidarity. Notably, anticolonial movements rarely developed "reverse racism," instead embracing inclusive nationalist visions. Revolution, like nationalism, is an invention that can be pirated but never precisely duplicated. Following Nairn's insight that developmental processes resist exact repetition, revolutionary societies like Cuba, Albania, and China paradoxically see themselves as "ahead" of Western nations in revolutionary-socialist terms while remaining "behind" in economic development. The Bolshevik model proved decisive because it demonstrated how revolution could succeed even in pre-industrial societies, allowing followers to potentially "cut history off at the pass." Revolutionaries who capture state power inevitably inherit both symbolic and practical elements from the regimes they overthrow. Despite ideological opposition to previous rulers, revolutionary leaders often occupy the same physical seats of power. Beyond these symbolic continuities, they inherit the state's functional apparatus: files, archives, laws, records, and bureaucratic systems. This inheritance leads revolutionary leaderships to adopt "official nationalism" reminiscent of dynastic predecessors. They naturalize the ancient state and wrap themselves in its antique finery, explaining the striking "state Machiavellism" that characterizes post-revolutionary regimes. Despite nationalism's immense influence, theoretical understanding remains conspicuously meager. Hugh Seton-Watson concludes no "scientific definition" of the nation can be devised, while Tom Nairn calls nationalism "Marxism's great historical failure." Yet the reality is plain: nation-ness stands as the most universally legitimate value in contemporary political life, with no signs of abating. Almost yearly, the United Nations admits new members, while established nations face challenges from sub-nationalisms within their borders. The end of nationalism remains nowhere in sight, as the imagined community continues to command our deepest loyalties and shape our collective destinies.
