The author contrasts Steven Pinker's optimistic view that human problems are solvable through Enlightenment thinking with philosopher John Gray's pessimistic stance that human advances are temporary and cyclical. Despite hoping for a Star Trek-like utopia with floating cities and restored biodiversity, the author acknowledges the contradiction in his own actions-driving a fossil fuel car to a climate rally while lamenting clear-cutting. Nietzsche was wrong about cows being "fettered to the moment"-they can plan and experience melancholy.
