Burning Out Together: Parenting in the Age of Exhaustion

Millennial parents describe their burnout in visceral terms. Lisa from Pennsylvania explains how you "think you have it under control until something throws it all off and you have a breakdown" over realizing your child's shoes are too small. Lauren describes "the kind of exhaustion where you can't really have other feelings," while Amy confesses parenting burnout makes her feel like she doesn't "want to take care of anyone anymore, ever." Jenny simply notes she's "not quite on board with the concept of 'burnout'" because it's like water to a fish-so omnipresent it's impossible to recognize as unusual. Contemporary parenting culture enforces impossible ideals within inadequate caregiving scenarios while blaming individual parents for societal failures. It equates exhaustion with devotion, suggesting the "best" parents give until there's nothing left of themselves. This problem-parenting burnout-stems from shifting ideas about "good parenting," stubborn notions about whose labor counts, work overflowing outside the workplace, and American society still being arranged as if every family has a stay-at-home caretaker despite fewer families having one. Modern parenting practices evolved from earlier generations' fears: fear of an increasingly dangerous world requiring total surveillance, and fear of downward mobility that could only be prevented by pouring resources into children. These anxieties have intensified for millennials, leading to even more "concerted cultivation" with packed schedules, enrichment activities, and college planning starting before birth-all reinforced through social media, parenting blogs, and books. Society has failed to adapt to dual-income families, offering no mandatory paid parental leave, limited affordable childcare, and school schedules incompatible with work schedules. Rather than returning to looser supervision standards or altering work hours, society has mandated constant supervision. Schools won't release children without approved adults present, and parents risk CPS reports for allowing even late-elementary-school children to be home alone. Afterschool programs, while beneficial, place significant financial strain on families. In one New Jersey district, parents pay $600 monthly for full-day kindergarten plus afterschool care. Seattle's Ballard neighborhood has three-year waitlists with weekly costs approaching $500. Nationally, childcare averages $8,700 annually, with preschool reaching $13,000 in some states. Costs increased 70% from 1985-2012, consuming 36% of single parents' income. Burnout occurs when the gap between ideals and reality becomes unbearable. Millennials have internalized that failure stems from insufficient effort rather than systemic issues. The labor of perfect parenting compounds in ways that drain women of energy to resist standards they recognize as nonsensical. Many mothers can articulate the impossible standards of "good" motherhood while simultaneously feeling compelled to meet them. Working mothers now spend as much time parenting as 1970s stay-at-home mothers did-essentially working two full-time jobs. To accommodate both, they sacrifice sleep and personal time while embracing "new domesticity" demands like Pinterest-perfect crafts and themed activities.

Burn It Down: Moving Beyond Individual Solutions

I begin this conclusion with a personal admission: I'm not a parent and likely won't be. Like many millennials, I've "delayed" adult milestones-getting a 401k at thirty-one, buying a house at thirty-seven, remaining unmarried. But did I choose to delay these things, or did societal realities make it impossible to do otherwise? Throughout my career trajectory-grad school, moving for jobs, journalism in New York with student loan payments-I watched friends navigate parenthood. They made parenting "work" through endless labor, concerted cultivation, and compromises I couldn't imagine making while already burning out. I couldn't make the math work financially or emotionally, having finally reached tentative security after years of struggle. Children themselves aren't the problem-they're wonderful. But our society turns them into "mini-life bombs" through unrealistic expectations and unsustainable labor demands. Increasingly, millennials are making similar calculations. Between 2017-2018, birth rates hit historic lows in America and the UK. We don't have fewer children because we love careers more than babies; we struggle to see how society allows us to do both without self-destruction. Japan offers a stark preview of where we're heading: a fertility rate of just 1.42, with a quarter of women 35-39 never marrying. Japanese working women still perform the majority of domestic labor while their husbands, trapped in overwork culture, average less than five hours of housework weekly. Only 6% of Japanese men take paternity leave, averaging just five days of their available year. The result is burnout so severe there's a specific word-karoshi-for death from overwork. But something is shifting. We're realizing: it doesn't have to be this way. We shouldn't have to choose between excelling at work and thriving as individuals. Parenting shouldn't be a contest. Leisure shouldn't be this scarce. Domestic labor shouldn't be this unequal. We shouldn't be this anxious about everything. I won't offer a checklist of solutions-I can't fix you when society has broken you. Instead, I've tried to provide a lens to see yourself and the world clearly. Look squarely at your fatigue and remember no app or self-help book can lift it. It's a symptom of living as a millennial today, exacerbated by race, class, debt and immigration status. What we can do is unite in resistance to the status quo, refuse to blame ourselves for societal failures, and vote for politicians who will fight tirelessly for change. Millennials have been denigrated and blamed for struggling in situations designed for our failure. But if we have the endurance to work ourselves this deeply into the ground, we also have the strength to fight. We have little savings and less stability. Our anger is barely contained. Underestimate us at your peril: We have so little left to lose.
