A new generation may miss the cues of "single-illness" entirely-when shown Kate and Leopold, today's pre-teen girls questioned why anyone would choose the past over career opportunities, noting practically that "if she really went back to then, then now, when it's time for her real life, she'd already be dead." The single woman should live well in her own time, "on her own terms," without judgment. "There have been too many epitaphs for the single woman," Israel concludes, "and almost every one of them is pathetic. She is not."
