Alice Hoffman is an American novelist known for blending literary fiction and magical realism, often writing about family, love, grief, and survival. Her best-known books include Practical Magic, The Dovekeepers, and Here on Earth. Author of more than 30 books, she has been widely translated, and several works have been adapted for screen.
Alice Hoffman was born in New York City on March 16, 1952, and grew up on Long Island. After graduating from high school in 1969, she earned a BA from Adelphi University, then studied at Stanford’s Creative Writing Center on a Mirrielees Fellowship in 1973 and 1974, receiving an MA in creative writing. She later earned an MA from Harvard Divinity School and is listed as a fellow there. The decisive early turn came at Stanford: mentored by Albert J. Guerard and Maclin Bocock Guerard, she wrote Property Of at twenty-one and published it soon after an early short story in Fiction led editor Ted Solotaroff to ask if she had a novel.
