Raymond C. Ortlund Jr. is the author of The Death of Porn and a respected pastor and biblical counselor specializing in sexual integrity, spiritual formation, and gospel-centered living. The problem isn't that you aren't religious enough. Religion says "do better, try harder," but that's not God talking-it's your guilty conscience pretending to be God. Your problem isn't lack of religion but settling for less than your true dignity. When you trivialize God, you trivialize your God-created self. That's why you, created for mastery, grind out your job; why you, created for dignity, grovel before degrading porn; why you, created for destiny, settle for mere popularity. Sin is as unchosen as hunger, as comfortable as sleep, as inevitable as gravity, as lethal as poison. It offers itself as an option but takes over as a master. We're not good men who mess up; we're bad men who prove it daily. We're a complicated mix of two opposites: we are royal, and we are evil. But God wants you as you are. When everything was on the line, God changed the subject from our shame to Jesus and his grace. Jesus lived the royal life we should have lived and died the shameful death we should have died. At the cross, we proved how bad we are to God, but God proved how good he is to us. At the cross, God didn't sweep our evil under the rug but exposed it and paid for it. His forgiveness is noble forgiveness. That's why when God washes you clean in the blood of Christ, you can allow yourself to feel forgiven. Freedom is what God wants for you. Maybe you look at your mess and think God must despise you. But self-punishment doesn't make you more forgivable-it blocks your way to forgiveness. He's inviting you to come out of hiding and stand tall again. Your shame is precisely where he can re-create you most gloriously. He sides with you against your sin, not against you because of your sin. Don't try to figure that out-his big heart makes no sense to our puny brains. Porn represents Satan's systematic attempt to degrade women from royalty to slavery, twisting something sacred into something profane. Consider Tara's story, which illuminates these truths through painful contrast. Trafficked and abused from childhood, she never saw herself as human or worthy. "I didn't have the luxury of feeling. I didn't have the luxury of being human." But Jesus found her in that darkness. Through Christian friends and a loving husband who treats her "like a priceless treasure," she's discovering her true identity. "That past is not who I am. I am not defined by what was done to me by them; I am defined by what was done for me by Him." Tara's message to men who look at porn cuts through all justification: "What if it was your sister? Many false versions of Jesus pervade modern culture: the "Feel-Good Jesus" who always approves and never challenges, making us wonder if porn is really that bad - a cosmic therapist more interested in our comfort than our character. Then there's the "Feel-Bad Jesus" who constantly finds fault, offering heaven only if we try harder, turning faith into an exhausting treadmill of performance. Both are phantoms that miss the profound complexity of Jesus's true nature. The real Jesus attracted failures, exiles, and losers - the scum of society. Tax collectors like Matthew, prostitutes like the woman at Simon's house, and countless unnamed outcasts found acceptance in his presence. He didn't merely tolerate sinners; he actively sought their company, sharing meals in their homes and defending them publicly, knowing full well who they were and what they'd done. While religious elites sneered and plotted against him, the broken found genuine welcome. This Jesus moves toward the broken, not the strong, and wore the label "friend of sinners" as a badge of honor rather than shame. Jesus embodies the paradoxical unity of Lion and Lamb. This world belongs to him; our sufferings and sins no longer define our identity or destiny. The Lion is actively bending our pain and failures to enhance our royal status as children of God. We're trapped in consequences we created but never intended, longing for a second chance at life and dignity. This deep sadness drives many men toward fantasy worlds of consequence-free "freedom," but Monday morning always returns with its harsh realities. Jesus says, "I am the Lamb slain to answer for whatever you've done" - offering real freedom through forgiveness rather than escape through denial. The Lion confronts our sins while the Lamb pays for them, restoring dignity to porn stars and honor to porn consumers alike. All Jesus asks is that we lay our burdens at his cross, where they become his forever, freeing us to grow into men of integrity. This dual nature of Christ means we find both uncompromising truth and unlimited grace in the same person. We face a choice between two competing worlds. One is dominated by Satan, who makes his realm seem exciting and inevitable. Though porn feels inescapable and integrity impossible, Satan's ultimate goal isn't about sex - he wants total denial of Jesus, the Bible, and human dignity. Porn promises to enhance sexuality while actually neutralizing masculine authority and freedom, leaving men passive and isolated. The alternative is Christ's kingdom - a new human race, a second Eden where humanity flourishes as originally intended. Jesus sprints through our exhausted world gathering despairing sinners, preferring the most hopeless cases because they best display his transforming power. When the King returns, he'll recreate our world without pain or boredom, where colors are brighter and tastes richer than we can imagine. This royal freedom of heart isn't just a future promise - it's available now, even in our broken world, a sacred gift that should never be surrendered for temporary pleasures.

Chapter 5

Fighting For Nobility

Your royalty isn't just for you-it's for liberating other men. You're more ready than you feel, as God has been preparing you since before birth to stand as a prophetic presence in a world of lies. It's Game Day now, and you're on the field playing offense. The task is simple though not easy: just get going and do whatever you can. Despite failures and challenges, Jesus will sustain you because you're on the right side of history through his resurrection. Your fight resembles the final months of World War II-the decisive battle was won at D-Day, though fighting continued. Similarly, Jesus won the decisive battle through his death and resurrection, making final victory inevitable. You're fighting for nobility-not aristocratic status, but a heroic character defined by eagerness to do more than the minimum. A noble man generously volunteers to do what's best for others. This nobility offers a third path between cowardice (keeping your head down) and fanaticism (forcing change by any means). Like Abraham Lincoln confronting slavery, choosing nobility positions you to make lasting impact that future generations will respect. When you take up the fight against evil, you are planning something noble, standing for something noble. With Jesus, you'll be steadily unstoppable. Guard your heart vigilantly, for from it flow the springs of life. True flourishing comes from inside out, not outside in. With Jesus living within you, you can always offer something positive to others. Guard your heart in two ways: First, guard against lustful thoughts by refusing temptation immediately and crying out to God. Like Job, integrity means turning away from evil, not avoiding temptation entirely. Second, guard against despairing thoughts-your worst temptation isn't sexual but spiritual, thinking God has given up on you. Remember Luther's comfort: "Above all righteousness and sin stands the declaration 'I am the Lord your God.'" The bad thoughts and feelings inside you can't be managed or contained. Your own halfway measures have failed. Those parts dragging you down must die-maybe a thousand times. Turn your darkest places over to the Holy Spirit, who won't belittle you but loves you most in your worst parts. The Spirit doesn't want you to lose your sexuality but to gain your true, glorious, purposeful sexuality. Like C.S. Lewis's story of the lizard transformed into a stallion, whatever the Spirit kills in you will be raised to newness of life-better than before.

Chapter 6

The Power of Brotherhood

You won't regain integrity alone, but can flourish in strong brotherhood with other men. The journey to freedom isn't about achieving perfection or becoming superhuman - it's about stumbling forward together toward Jesus with your brothers. By moving forward shoulder to shoulder, supporting and encouraging one another, you can collectively starve the predatory Beast of the porn industry and create a new world of nobility and authentic masculinity. We don't overcome sins through sheer willpower or isolated determination but by courageously confessing them to death. One trustworthy brother - someone who won't judge or condemn - must know what isn't working in your life. That's how we defy the paralyzing power of shame and discover firsthand how gentle Jesus is with broken men who are ready for healing. This brother becomes both witness and companion to your journey. Confessing to Jesus alone, while essential, isn't sufficient - confessing to brothers destroys your carefully constructed false self but creates genuine, lasting belonging. The very area where sin has its deepest claws in you is precisely where Jesus loves you most tenderly. When sinful men gather in vulnerability and confess together, Christ unites us as brothers of his cross, forming bonds stronger than shame. You face a crucial choice: you can be impressive or known, but never both simultaneously. Choose radical honesty now, before you harden into an unwitting ally of the porn industry. Find that Christian brother - perhaps someone who has walked this path before - to whom you can confess regularly. As Dietrich Bonhoeffer profoundly taught, confession breaks through to authentic brotherhood, bringing sin into the light where it inevitably weakens, creating deep bonds where neither man will ever face their struggles alone again. After confession comes the vital practice of prayer, because integrity is nothing short of a miracle. "The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working" (James 5:16). God consistently gives supernatural power to weak men who pray fervently and honestly. With God, you don't need polished words or theological eloquence - just raw desperation. Pray specifically for your brother's freedom, commit to never abandoning him in his journey, and believe wholeheartedly in God's promised healing power. Confession and prayer inevitably lead to healing - not just physical restoration but profound healing of our wounded souls, our deepest anguish, and our most haunting regrets. God's healing might manifest as feeling truly forgiven for the first time, experiencing internal cleansing, rekindling excitement about your future, and finally breaking free from shame's suffocating grip. An honest man standing firmly within a praying brotherhood positions himself where God's healing flows most freely. Imagine the transformation if, over the next decade, men worldwide gathered in small groups dedicated to authentic confession and fervent prayer. Picture a mighty wave of divine healing washing over communities, churches, and nations. When Satan attempts to paralyze you with shame, follow Martin Luther's battle-tested wisdom: use the devil's own sword against him. When he brands you a sinner, boldly reply that Christ died specifically for sinners, making you righteous and eternally saved. Never grovel before your enemy the devil! Instead, stand tall in your hard-won freedom through stubborn, unwavering faith in Christ's finished work.

Building a New World

As God ruthlessly perfects those He royally elects, He converts them into forms only He understands. Your personal journey of transformation deserves to be shared. Create an "elevator conversation" about how Jesus is helping you now-not just how He saved you in the past. The more vulnerable your story, the more hope it gives to men feeling trapped. Make your words modest, few, and heartfelt, and don't forget humor-laughter can't be pompous. Prayer feels weak but is surprisingly powerful. We're not just fighting websites but unseen demonic forces that require spiritual weapons. Begin each day asking for the Holy Spirit's help, and pray for worldwide awakening-even revival within the porn industry itself. Our King can pour forgiveness and joy upon everyone involved in that engine of oppression. Unless called to singleness, marriage is an underrated strategy for changing the world. Don't wait for perfection-fall in love with a woman who loves Jesus and commit. A healthy marriage makes Christ's love visible to a skeptical world. If your wife carries wounds from this brutal world, you have the sacred privilege of proving God's love is real through your own. Music and art are powerful weapons for building nobility. The civil rights movement demonstrated this power-when police raided a school in 1958, young Jamila Jones and friends singing "We are not afraid" made armed officers tremble. Where are today's creative voices writing our generation's "We Shall Overcome" to fight porn's degradation? Advocacy for nobility doesn't require political power-it's simpler and more effective. Go public as a man experiencing God's healing. Be wise about what you share and respect your wife's feelings, but vulnerability with your brothers creates a powerful witness. Small personal changes grow into social transformation because brotherhood can replace porn more powerfully than laws can ban it. Joy isn't a small thing-it's powerful. Joy from heaven makes you and your brothers a wave of renewal for an exhausted generation. While it's not sinful to mourn sad things, self-pity and ungratefulness spiral toward porn. What Satan truly fears is the broken man who, stripped of everything, turns to Jesus in desperate need and finds unshakable joy.

Chapter 8

Your True Identity

Who are you? What gives a man his identity? Your answer, whether true or false, defines every aspect of your life - your relationships, your work, your purpose, and your battles with temptation. Wrong ways of defining ourselves arise naturally from our culture, experiences, and achievements, while Jesus maps out a radically counterintuitive path. Your true identity isn't something you create or achieve - it's a gift from God, a surprising discovery, and then a committed daily choice. Your true identity comes from God, not from looking inside yourself or listening to others' opinions. Your identity inseparably connects you to God - everything about who He is correlates to who you are. Like a mirror reflecting light, your identity reflects His character. Your instinctive sense of identity is fundamentally skewed because forgetting God means forgetting who we truly are. Cultural messages about self-discovery and self-actualization lead us further from, not closer to, our true selves. We are God's dependents in multiple, overlapping ways: poor in spirit yet rich in mercy, weak in ourselves yet strong in Him, forgiven sinners, adopted children, refugees seeking divine shelter, sheep in His protective flock, servants to our benevolent Master, willingly submissive to Jesus, God-fearing in wisdom, and worshipers in spirit and truth. Every aspect of a man's true identity expresses humility, need, and dependency before the Lord - standing in stark contrast to cultural notions of masculinity that emphasize independence, self-sufficiency, and raw strength. Jesus, the true man, demonstrates this paradox perfectly. He embraced weakness and submission yet demonstrated genuine strength, servant leadership, and divine authority. His core identity as the humble Son of God led to His calling to perfectly represent God to humanity. Like William Wallace in Braveheart rallying men to a noble cause, Jesus is picking a fight with the world of pornography and sexual exploitation, and he's recruiting you into this battle for human dignity. It won't be easy or comfortable, but human dignity is ultimately a winning cause because He champions it. Where are the young men of this generation who will hold their lives cheap and be faithful unto death? Where are God's men in this day of God's power? The call goes out for warriors who know who they are in Christ.
