Chapter 2

An Old Lie Wearing New Clothes

Before Karl Marx, there was Robert Owen. Early socialist, reformer, utopian — and, according to Engler's research, a man who claimed sea spirits had personally endorsed his vision of a communal society. Owen wanted marriage abolished. He believed people would own nothing and be perfectly happy about it. Sit with that for a second, because it's not a throwaway detail — it's the same phrase, "own nothing and be happy," that shows up again later in this story, in a very different century, from a very different institution. Marx arrived a little later, in the 1800s, with a theory that history is nothing but the record of class conflict. Feudal lords against serfs, then, once the factories rose, wealthy owners against the workers who ran the machines. Marx believed this conflict wasn't optional, it was destiny. Eventually the workers would unite, seize the factories, and build a stateless, classless society, one that needed no God, no government, no family structure, because human beings would simply flourish once the chains of ownership were broken. That's classical Marxism. And it never happened the way he predicted. Engler is direct about the result: not utopia, but consistent disaster and enormous death. So the twentieth century produced something else, thinkers who kept Marx's diagnosis while discarding his broken economics. They dropped the failed prophecy about factories and history's iron laws. But they kept the skeleton underneath it: society is fundamentally oppressive, and it must be overturned. And here's the move that matters most. Where Marx drew his lines around class, rich owners versus poor laborers, the newer thinkers widened the net. Now the oppressor category could include men, Christians, heterosexuals, light-skinned people, able-bodied people, Europeans, colonizers. Everyone outside those categories gets sorted, in advance, as oppressed. Notice what happened to the moral test. Marx's world, whatever its flaws, at least asked what you owned and what you did with it. This newer version asks what you are. Your income, your skin tone, your gender, not your choices, become the verdict on your character before you've said a word. That's a quieter, colder kind of judgment than anything in a factory ledger, and it's the engine running underneath so much of what you'll hear called "social justice" today.

When Darwin's work reached him, Marx seized on it as scientific cover for the worldview he'd already built. He needed humans to be their own authors, their own gods, their own saviors, and evolution gave him a story where that was at least imaginable. And later followers were even blunter about the stakes. The Italian communist Antonio Gramsci said it plainly: socialism is precisely the religion that has to kill Christianity. Not compete with it. Replace it. Once you hear that line, the pattern gets hard to unsee, this was never simply an economic argument about who owns the factory. It was always a rival account of who saves you.

Two Rival Gospels

If Marxism functions like a religion, it needs its own version of the big three questions every religion answers: what's wrong with people, what will fix it, and who's the hero of the story. The oppressor-oppressed framework offers something psychologically easier. If you're in the oppressed category, you're innocent by definition. Soft Totalitarianism

Look at the shape of that in practice. ESG investing, environmental, social, and governance scoring, now decides which companies get capital based on ideological compliance, not just performance. China's social credit system throttles internet speeds and bans flights for citizens judged untrustworthy by the state. The World Economic Forum's Klaus Schwab wrote openly about the Fourth Industrial Revolution reshaping how people live, work, and relate to each other, and the same institution has floated the idea of a global digital currency system, the kind of infrastructure that makes total financial visibility, and therefore total control, technically possible. There's a phrase that circles back here, and it's worth pausing on. Robert Owen, the early socialist with the marriage-abolition plan and the endorsement from sea spirits, believed people would own nothing and be happy. Two centuries later, that exact sentiment resurfaces in the language around the WEF's vision of an "access economy," where you don't own your car or your home, you just subscribe to access. The historian Yuval Harari, writing about humanity's future, described the emerging human project as, in his words, attaining divinity, the third ancient lie, in modern packaging, funded by some of the most powerful institutions on earth. Even a Canadian government working paper, produced by a group of new public servants, carrying an official disclaimer that it wasn't binding policy, floated ideas reallocating capital and debt along lines that echo this same worldview. It's simpler and stranger than that, a shared set of assumptions, echoing across institutions that don't need to coordinate because they're already drawing from the same well.

Chapter 6

Four Fronts of the Revolution

If you wanted to dismantle a society's foundations on purpose, where would you actually apply pressure? Engler's answer is that every stable society rests on institutions carrying its worldview forward, family, church, school, and she names the fronts where that transmission gets attacked. The first front is the church itself. Weaken it two ways: attack it directly through legal restriction, or let it compromise itself into irrelevance by slowly accommodating the culture instead of confronting it. Engler notes this second method doesn't even require an outside enemy, churches have often handed this one over voluntarily. The second front is the family. Family is the unit God designed to carry a worldview from one generation to the next, so break the family and you break that transmission line. The language of "disrupt the family," which surfaced in some modern social movements, isn't accidental, it echoes concrete historical policy. Under Lenin's regime, marriage laws loosened, adultery was decriminalized, husbands and wives were assigned to separate factories, and parental authority was quietly undercut. Family disruption isn't a metaphor. It's been a documented governing strategy before. The third front is the young. They're still forming their beliefs, they have the least life experience to check new ideas against, and they're concentrated in one place, school, for years at a stretch. Every revolution in history has needed young energy to execute it, and mass education is the most efficient recruitment pipeline ever built. The fourth front is the sexualization of children. It sounds like an outlier next to the other three, but Engler places it deliberately: it destabilizes the family, alienates kids from the church, and confuses their sense of identity, which conveniently clears space for a new identity, and a new sense of belonging, to be offered from somewhere else entirely. None of these four moves work in isolation. They're a single campaign aimed at the same target from four directions: the institutions that hand a worldview to the next generation.

Five Processes That Soften a Society

That combination is what makes people trade freedom and conviction for convenience and pleasure, largely without noticing the trade happened. The fifth is supervision, building the digital surveillance infrastructure totalitarian systems have always needed. Old communist regimes had to torture people to extract the kind of information now voluntarily uploaded to an app every single day, tucked behind a privacy policy nobody reads. The tools of control used to require brutality. Now they require a terms-of-service agreement.

Chapter 8

Three Foundations for Standing Strong

So if this is the diagnosis, what's the actual defense, not against tanks, but against something this diffuse? Engler's answer turns personal fast, and it rests on three foundations she says show up again and again, in scripture, in research, and in the testimonies of Christian students living through exactly this pressure on university campuses. The first is spiritual foundations, a close, active walk with God, where his word genuinely governs your thinking and your decisions rather than just decorating them. That means studying scripture, praying, worshiping, memorizing it, grounding your identity in belonging to Jesus rather than in any social category, and drawing your boundaries before the pressure arrives, not in the moment it does, because nobody thinks clearly for the first time under pressure. The second is intellectual foundations, actually studying how to defend what you believe, building real critical thinking skills so new arguments don't catch you flat-footed. This is the difference between inheriting a faith and being able to explain why it holds up. The third is interpersonal foundations, real Christian community, deliberately built to counter that atomization process from before. Engler points specifically to intergenerational discipleship, keeping older and younger believers connected inside a local church, because isolation is the thing the whole system depends on, and community is its direct antidote. Resist brainwashing tactics that dress up human opinion as unquestionable truth and try to silence anyone who disagrees. And overcome evil with good, loving enemies the way Jesus taught, rather than mirroring the hostility aimed at you. Two of these deserve a second look because they cut against instinct. Living not by lies sounds passive, it's not. Refusing to affirm what you don't believe, in a culture built on soft compliance, is an act of real resistance, maybe the hardest one, because it costs you social comfort every single time you do it. And overcoming evil with good is the tactic most likely to feel naive in a fight this described as ideological warfare, yet it's the one Engler ends on, deliberately, because it's the one that actually breaks the cycle the other side depends on.

Chapter 10

What Outlasts the Wall

Every empire built on force eventually meets people who simply won't be moved by it, that's the quiet lesson sitting underneath the Berlin Wall story and the Velvet Revolution. Regimes with tanks and secret police couldn't out-wait a handful of congregations that refused to stop believing what they believed. Engler's closing note is that Jesus has already overcome the world, not will, has, and that following him through a hostile culture will cost something real. She doesn't pretend otherwise.
