On July 22, 1993, James and Deloris left their Charlotte suburb home in different directions-she to visit Michael in Chicago, he in his prized cranberry Lexus (a gift from Michael with vanity plate UNC0023) to attend a friend's funeral in Pender County. He was scheduled to join Michael's celebrity baseball game the next day, but never arrived. Police had discovered the abandoned Lexus on August 5 near Fayetteville, North Carolina, with its window smashed and stereo, tires and plates removed. Authorities traced the vehicle and contacted the family. Meanwhile, they connected the car to a badly decomposed body found August 3 in a creek near McColl, South Carolina. The victim had died from a single .38-caliber gunshot to the chest. Authorities tracked cell phone calls from the Lexus to two eighteen-year-olds from Lumberton-Larry Martin Demery and Daniel Andre Green. Both were arrested and charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy, and armed robbery. Investigators determined James Jordan had stopped his car alongside Interstate 95 near Lumberton to rest in the early morning hours of July 23. The armed teenagers shot and killed him, only discovering his identity when checking his wallet. By fall, Jordan informed Reinsdorf he wanted to retire-not over money, but because he'd lost his motivation for basketball. On October 6, 1993, Jordan publicly announced his retirement, though he cryptically suggested he might return "five years down the road." Jordan sought relief in an unexpected direction-baseball, the game his father had loved. With Reinsdorf's blessing, Jordan began secretly taking batting practice at Comiskey Park five days a week. In January, Jordan officially announced he would attend spring training with the White Sox in Sarasota, Florida. This wasn't "fantasy baseball" but a serious attempt, driven partly by those doubting him and partly by his father's unfulfilled dream of playing professional baseball. "It was really his father's dream that he play baseball," Phil Jackson observed. "When his father passed away, I think Michael was kind of living out his father's dream." After quitting baseball due to the MLB strike, Jordan began quietly appearing at Bulls practices in March 1995. For ten tantalizing days, Jordan practiced while the media camped outside the Berto Center, creating unprecedented hype about his possible return. Finally, on March 18, he ended the speculation with a two-word press release: "I'm back." Jordan's life changed when he met supermodel Yvette Prieto, even as his Charlotte Bobcats struggled financially. His 2009 Hall of Fame induction became unexpectedly controversial when Jordan, nervous and unprepared, used his speech to unburden himself about all the slights, real or imagined, that had fueled his competitive fire throughout his career. He revisited old grievances about being cut from his high school varsity team, Dean Smith keeping him off Sports Illustrated as a freshman, disputes with Tex Winter, and his dislike of Jerry Krause. Jordan became the first former player to be majority owner of an NBA team when he purchased the Charlotte Bobcats, with David Stern working behind the scenes to facilitate the transition. Despite continued criticism of his executive abilities, Jordan showed growth by bringing on Rich Cho to run basketball operations-a significant concession for someone who had always struggled with trust. The Bobcats' fortunes took a devastating turn in 2011 when Jordan traded veteran All-Star Gerald Wallace for draft picks and role players-a rebuilding move that sent the team into a tailspin. The 2012 season brought unprecedented humiliation as the team finished 7-59, a .106 winning percentage that set the NBA record for worst season ever. Despite these challenges, Jordan remained committed to Charlotte, determined to build an NBA presence in the region.
