I grew up in Iraq during the reign of Saddam Hussein, a time of fear and oppression that shaped my childhood and ultimately led to my desperate flight from the country. From a young age, I witnessed the brutality of the regime firsthand. Public executions were commonplace, with women accused of prostitution beheaded in the street. Entire towns could be razed for daring to oppose Saddam's rule. The culture of fear was all-encompassing, maintained through a vast network of informants and the ever-present threat of torture or disappearance for even the slightest criticism. I remember vividly the day my friend's father vanished after making an offhand remark about airline safety. We never saw him again. Such incidents were not uncommon in Saddam's Iraq. The regime's cruelty knew no bounds, and it became clear to me that to have any hope for a future, I would need to escape.
