Geboren: November 16, 1950 – Torrington, Wyoming, United States
William Kent Krueger is an American novelist who writes crime, mystery, and literary fiction, best known for his Cork O’Connor series and the standalones Ordinary Grace and This Tender Land. His work often explores family, loss, and the American Midwest; Ordinary Grace won the Edgar Award for Best Novel.
William Kent Krueger built his career less through literary institutions than through persistence, place, and a long apprenticeship to story. Born in Torrington, Wyoming, and raised partly in Oregon’s Cascade country, he grew up in a restless family and lived in multiple states before adulthood. He entered Stanford University in 1969, but after taking part in antiwar protest actions in 1970 he lost his scholarship and left school. The years that followed were varied and practical: he logged timber, worked construction, published some freelance journalism, and later researched child development at the University of Minnesota. A decisive turn came after he and his wife, Diane, moved to St. Paul in 1980, when family responsibilities sharpened his commitment to writing.
