Richard Branson’s career began not in a boardroom but in adolescence, when dyslexia and frustration with conventional schooling pushed him toward doing rather than credentialing. He left school at 16 and started Student magazine, a youth publication that mixed culture, politics, and education with an entrepreneurial instinct for audience and distribution. That first venture became the hinge of his life: the magazine’s mail-order record operation outgrew the publication itself, became Virgin in 1970, and soon led to Virgin Records, which developed into the world’s largest independent record label. From that base, Branson helped extend the Virgin name into airlines, telecommunications, health, banking, leisure, and space, with the Virgin network now encompassing more than 40 companies in over 35 countries.
