Nascido: June 05, 1944 – New York City, New York, United States
Jon Kabat-Zinn is an American scientist, meditation teacher, and writer best known for creating Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Through books such as Full Catastrophe Living and Wherever You Go, There You Are, he helped bring secular mindfulness into mainstream medicine, psychology, and public life worldwide.
Jon Kabat-Zinn grew up in New York City and trained first as a scientist, completing doctoral work in molecular biology at MIT in Salvador Luria’s laboratory. During graduate school he began meditating and studying Zen, an encounter that set up the central question of his early career: how to reconcile rigorous science with contemplative practice. After teaching biology, working with yoga and meditation, and eventually joining the University of Massachusetts Medical School, he reached the decisive turning point in spring 1979, when an intensive retreat clarified a practical idea. He would bring the essence of meditation into a hospital, translate it into plain American language, and offer it to people dealing with pain, stress, and illness.
