Jason Fried is an entrepreneur and business writer focused on company building, work culture, software product design, and calm productivity. He co-founded 37signals, makers of Basecamp and HEY, and coauthored Rework, Remote, and It Doesn’t Have to Be Crazy at Work, influential books on modern management and work practices.
Jason Fried grew up in Chicago and studied finance at the University of Arizona, but his career took shape around design rather than banking. While still in school he freelanced on websites, then accepted a short-lived job as a creative director in San Diego before returning to Chicago and striking out on his own. In 1999 he helped start 37signals as a web-design firm. The decisive turn came when the company built an internal tool to manage its client work; released publicly as Basecamp in February 2004, it soon generated more revenue than consulting and allowed Fried to move from service work into software entrepreneurship full time.
