Hermawan Kartajaya is an Indonesian marketing strategist and author focused on modern marketing, branding, and entrepreneurship. He founded MarkPlus and chairs MCorp, and coauthored Marketing 3.0, Marketing 4.0, and Marketing 5.0 with Philip Kotler and Iwan Setiawan. His books have been translated into dozens of languages.
Biography & Author's Journey
Hermawan Kartajaya was born in Surabaya on November 18, 1947, and grew up in a modest family that shaped both his discipline and his practicality. After graduating from SMAK St. Louis, he entered Electrical Engineering at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember, but did not complete the degree. He then spent years teaching mathematics and physics at SMP Sasana Bhakti and SMAK St. Louis, an experience that left a lasting mark on his style as a clear, classroom-minded communicator. Determined to finish formal study, he later earned his undergraduate degree from Universitas Surabaya and went on to complete a Master of Science in International Marketing at the University of Strathclyde. His decisive career turn came when he moved from teaching into business roles at PT Panggung and PT HM Sampoerna, before founding MarkPlus Professional Service in Surabaya on May 1, 1990, widely described as Indonesia’s first marketing consulting firm.
