Esther Perel is a Belgian psychotherapist and relationship expert who writes about intimacy, desire, infidelity, and modern couplehood. She is the author of Mating in Captivity and The State of Affairs and host of Where Should We Begin? Her TED talks have reached millions worldwide.
Esther Perel was raised in Antwerp, Belgium, the daughter of Sala Ferlegier and Icek Perel, both survivors of Nazi concentration camps and the sole survivors of their families. She has described that upbringing as one marked by trauma, resilience, and an intense insistence on vitality, a sensibility that later informed her interest in how people seek not only security, but aliveness. After studying in Jerusalem and completing graduate training in the United States, including expressive arts and family-therapy work, she settled in New York. There she built her practice and spent the early part of her career working with refugees, immigrants, and intercultural couples negotiating identity, tradition, and change.
