Emily Nagoski is a sex educator and researcher whose work focuses on women’s sexuality, stress, and well-being. She wrote the New York Times bestseller Come as You Are and coauthored Burnout with Amelia Nagoski, helping popularize evidence-based discussions of desire, arousal, and the social dimensions of stress.
Emily Nagoski emerged from a Delaware upbringing that she shared closely with her twin sister, Amelia. At Brandywine High School, she later recalled, Jill Biden encouraged her to keep writing, an early affirmation that would matter long after her academic plans changed. At the University of Delaware, where she studied psychology with minors in cognitive science and philosophy, she became a peer health educator in 1995. She initially imagined a future in clinical neuropsychology, but teaching fellow students about sex, stress, and violence prevention became the decisive turning point: the work felt both intellectually serious and personally meaningful. She continued at Indiana University, earning an M.S. in counseling and then a Ph.D. in health behavior, with clinical and research training at the Kinsey Institute.
