David Spiegelhalter is a British statistician and science communicator whose work focuses on risk, uncertainty, probability, and evidence. He is the author of The Art of Statistics and Covid by Numbers, and has broadened public understanding of data through academic leadership, media work, and honors including a knighthood.
David Spiegelhalter was born in Barnstaple, Devon, and educated at Barnstaple Grammar School before reading mathematics at Keble College, Oxford. At Oxford, the statistician Adrian Smith helped steer him away from pure mathematics and toward probability and Bayesian thinking, a shift that became the foundation of his career. He then completed an MSc and a PhD in Statistical Science at University College London. From the start, his path combined technical depth with an unusual interest in how non-specialists understand numbers, risk, and uncertainty.
