Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a Nigerian novelist and essayist whose work explores identity, feminism, migration, and postcolonial history. She is best known for Purple Hibiscus, Half of a Yellow Sun, Americanah, and We Should All Be Feminists. Her writing has won major honors, including the Orange Prize for Fiction, and reached a global readership.
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie was born in Enugu, Nigeria, in 1977 and grew up on the campus of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where her father was a professor and her mother became the university’s first female registrar. A formative early turning point came when, as a child, she encountered the work of Chinua Achebe and recognized that African lives could occupy the center of serious literature. After studying medicine for a year at Nsukka, she left for the United States at nineteen, graduated summa cum laude from Eastern Connecticut State University in communication and political science, and later earned graduate degrees in creative writing from Johns Hopkins and African history from Yale.
