Born: December 02, 1963 – Los Angeles, California, United States
Ann Patchett is an American novelist and essayist whose work explores family, friendship, loss, and moral choice. She is best known for Bel Canto, Commonwealth, and The Dutch House. Winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award and the Women’s Prize for Fiction, she is a major contemporary voice in literary fiction.
Ann Patchett was born in Los Angeles on December 2, 1963, and moved to Nashville when she was six, a city she would later help shape as both a novelist and a bookseller. She studied at Sarah Lawrence College, graduating in 1984, and earned an M.F.A. from the University of Iowa in 1987. Her first fiction appeared while she was still an undergraduate, an early sign that her career would emerge through magazines and books rather than digital self-promotion. The Patron Saint of Liars, published in 1992, announced her as a serious novelist; Taft and The Magician’s Assistant followed and established her interest in improvised families, grief, reinvention, and the emotional bargains people make with one another.
