Alex Haley was an American writer focused on African American history, identity, and genealogy. He is best known for The Autobiography of Malcolm X and Roots: The Saga of an American Family. Roots won a special Pulitzer Prize, sold millions of copies, and became an influential television miniseries.
Alex Haley, born Alexander Murray Palmer Haley on August 11, 1921, in Ithaca, New York, became one of the most influential American narrative writers of the twentieth century by turning family memory into public history. He spent much of his youth in Henning, Tennessee, in a close-knit extended family whose elders passed down stories that would later shape his literary imagination. His father, Simon A. Haley, was an educator, and Haley briefly attended college before leaving school and joining the U.S. Coast Guard in 1939. That decision proved decisive. During two decades of military service, he began writing seriously, first in spare hours and then with growing discipline, gradually moving from private ambition toward a professional life in letters.
