Alec Ross is an American author and innovation expert focused on technology, geopolitics, and the future of work. He served as Senior Advisor for Innovation to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and wrote the New York Times bestseller The Industries of the Future and the later book The Raging 2020s.
Alec Ross emerged from a public-school upbringing in Charleston, West Virginia, and graduated from Northwestern University in 1994 before beginning his career not in publishing but in service, as a sixth-grade Teach For America teacher in Baltimore. That classroom experience, followed by work at Enterprise Community Partners and the co-founding of One Economy, gave him a practical education in inequality, access, and the uses of technology in everyday life. At One Economy, the venture grew from a three-person startup into a global nonprofit serving low-income communities on four continents, a formative period that established Ross’s habit of viewing innovation through both economic and civic lenses.
