Belief in God provides a sense of control in an otherwise random world. While geophysicists explain earthquakes through tectonic plate movements, attributing them to God's anger offers not just an explanation but also a sense of control-earthquakes can be avoided by keeping God happy. This explains why the wealthy are less religious (83.8% of Americans making under $10,000 believe in God versus 68.7% of those making over $150,000).
Humans naturally seek purpose in everything. While adults understand that manufactured objects like can openers have clear purposes but natural objects like rocks don't, children typically assign purpose even to natural objects (believing a rock is pointy "so animals can scratch themselves"). This innate tendency to perceive purpose extends to our own existence, leading people to seek meaning through divine design.
God becomes especially important when explaining suffering. Through "dyadic completion," people infer moral agents behind suffering victims. When children become obese, parents might blame McDonald's, but for massive suffering like natural disasters, people look to God. We not only think of God in human terms, we project our own traits onto Him. We can't perceive how our minds work; we access unconscious processes without observing their operation. Studies show our lack of self-insight: people invent quality differences between identical items, deny patterns in their dating preferences, and confidently explain choices they never actually made.
Confirmation bias gives us false confidence, as demonstrated in Milgram's obedience studies, where 65% of participants administered seemingly lethal shocks when instructed. Benjamin Libet's experiments further showed that brain activity precedes conscious decisions by 350 milliseconds, challenging our notion of free will.
This truth creates a dilemma - studies show that when people doubt free will, they behave more selfishly. Yet even everyday self-control proves largely illusory.
