Professionals aren't immune either. Doctors who've recently seen multiple cases of a particular disease become prone to misdiagnosing it in patients who don't have it-even for non-contagious conditions like appendicitis. Stockbrokers recommend buying when markets rise and selling when they fall, though statistically there's little connection between day-to-day movements.
A related phenomenon, the primacy error, shows how first impressions dominate our judgments. When watching someone solve anagrams, subjects believed more were solved when successes came early rather than late-even when the total number was identical. This explains why interviewers form impressions in the first minute and spend the rest confirming that impression.

Violence rarely occurs individually but flourishes in crowds where anonymity diminishes personal responsibility. Professional dress can distance people from others and encourage extreme behavior, as when judges make lenient rulings for rapists or blame victims-statements unlikely from someone not wearing a wig.
Muzifer Sherif's classic research with twelve-year-old boys at summer camp demonstrated how easily group hostility develops. When divided into two camps (the "Eagles" and "Rattlers"), the boys quickly abandoned previous friendships, developed group identities, and descended into antagonism during competitive games. To counteract these tendencies: resist being carried away by prevailing views; ensure different viewpoints are represented in committees; don't be affected by sycophancy; be wary of forming stereotypes; and remember that uniforms can powerfully influence behavior.

To avoid these traps: beware of overrating choices that cost you greatly; avoid moving by small steps toward actions you'd initially disapprove of; cut losses regardless of past investments; value possessions based on their current worth to you; don't minimize unpleasantness to justify your actions; and never allow insurance salesmen past your front door.

Even after Japanese submarines were spotted near Pearl Harbor, Kimmel waited for confirmation rather than acting immediately, leading to the fleet's destruction.
This tendency persists across professions: doctors refuse to change incorrect diagnoses, Home Secretaries decline to review cases of wrongfully convicted people, and even Nobel Prize-winner Linus Pauling persisted in his belief about vitamin C's curative powers long after evidence disproved it. Business managers often follow tradition rather than evidence, illustrated by a gin company's managing director who dismissed research findings that contradicted his own views.
Two key mechanisms drive this irrationality: actively avoiding contradictory evidence and refusing to believe contradictory evidence when encountered. In Wason's "2, 4, 6" experiment, subjects had to determine the underlying rule by testing other triplets. Most only tested sequences that confirmed their hypothesis (like "even numbers ascending by two") rather than trying to disprove it. The actual rule-"any three numbers in ascending order"-remained elusive because people failed to test disconfirming cases.

Most incorrectly choose A and 3, when logically they should select A and 7. The A card must be checked because finding anything but a 3 would disprove the rule. Even when we don't outright ignore contradictory evidence, we often distort it to maintain our beliefs. The Battle of Arnhem exemplifies how leaders distort evidence to support ill-conceived plans. General Montgomery, seeking personal glory, ordered a parachute drop near Arnhem to seize a Rhine bridge-ignoring crucial flaws in his plan. He dismissed intelligence reports of two Panzer divisions near the drop zone as "ridiculous," while his staff reinforced this denial, even suggesting an intelligence officer take leave for being "overtired" after showing photos of German tanks.
In a revealing experiment, researchers presented subjects with fabricated studies about capital punishment's effectiveness. Each subject read two studies-one supporting and one opposing the death penalty. Regardless of which study they read, subjects found the one supporting their pre-existing views "more convincing" and "better conducted," while readily spotting flaws in contradictory evidence. After reading both studies, subjects' original positions were actually strengthened rather than moderated.
To combat these tendencies: actively search for evidence against your own beliefs; entertain opposing hypotheses simultaneously; pay special attention to information that conflicts with your beliefs; and remember that nobody is always right, though some people are always wrong.

False Connections: How Our Minds Create Patterns That Don't Exist
Why do quack remedies and ineffective treatments persist despite scientific evidence against them? Practitioners maintain false beliefs through various mechanisms: justifying their expensive training, attributing natural recoveries to their treatment, ignoring dropouts, failing to keep proper records, lacking comparison groups, and blaming patients for non-improvement. These are all examples of "illusory correlation"-wrongly connecting unrelated events.
People consistently make errors in determining associations between events by ignoring negative cases. A physician might wrongly conclude a symptom indicates disease by noting 80 patients with the symptom developed the disease while only 20 didn't. But this conclusion is invalid without examining patients lacking the symptom. When all four possible combinations (symptom/disease, symptom/no disease, no symptom/disease, no symptom/no disease) are examined properly, the symptom often proves unrelated to the disease.
The Chapmans' experiments demonstrate that people bring preconceptions to observations that distort their interpretation. In their studies of projective tests like the Rorschach, they found clinicians believed certain responses indicated homosexuality despite evidence showing no such connection. When shown cards with random pairings of responses and traits, subjects falsely perceived correlations that matched their expectations while missing actual correlations.
We pay particular attention to people who stand out in groups-a woman among men or a black among whites-and subsequently evaluate these distinctive individuals in more extreme terms than others. This distorts our perception of correlations. In a more extreme form of irrationality, when each member of one set is paired with another set and each set has an unusual member, people wrongly believe the unusual members have been selectively paired together. It calculates the reliability with which each piece of evidence predicts performance, assigning appropriate weights to each factor. In a study of graduate student admissions at Oregon University, this mathematical approach predicted student success with approximately four times greater accuracy than the admissions committee's intuitive judgments.
In over a hundred studies comparing actuarial and intuitive prediction, not once have people performed better than mathematical methods. The actuarial approach has proven superior in predicting parole violations, pilot performance, job satisfaction, criminal recidivism, psychiatric diagnoses, corporate growth, and even horse racing outcomes.

Rather than consciously assigning values to predictors, they resolve dilemmas through "intuition" not based on evidence but on misleading expectations.
Despite actuarial methods consistently outperforming human judgment, people resist using them for several reasons: we remember unusual successes but forget failures, professionals want to believe in their special skills, self-fulfilling prophecies create illusions of good judgment, people wrongly argue that imperfect actuarial prediction isn't worthwhile, and many believe intuition has magical qualities.
Interviewing has repeatedly been shown to lack reliability and validity in personnel selection. Programs like MYCIN diagnose bacterial diseases more accurately than doctors, while banks use computer algorithms to assess loan applications with greater success than human officials. Ironically, businesses are more likely to use mathematical models when money is at stake than when human lives are at risk.
To make better decisions: suspect anyone claiming good intuition; use mathematical models when available; and recognize that intuition, while comforting, often leads us astray.
