These criticisms ignore historical reality-King did indeed "take highways" many times, and the civil rights movement was deeply disruptive, contentious, and unpopular.

Our popular history of the civil rights era focuses exclusively on Southern struggles in places like Selma, Montgomery, and Birmingham, culminating in legislative victories like the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act. This regional framing of racial injustice as a Southern problem rather than a national malady obscures how tens of thousands of people fought against Northern segregation from the 1940s to 1980s, challenging redlining, housing segregation, school inequality, job discrimination, and police brutality.
Northern movements faced dismissive claims that "this is not the South" and that disparities existed because Black people hadn't "adopted the right behaviors." The false distinction between Southern "de jure" segregation and Northern "de facto" segregation made Northern segregation seem more innocent, obscuring how government policies actively supported and maintained segregation throughout the country.
In New York, Reverend Milton Galamison led massive protests against school segregation, making the city's liberal elite uncomfortable by exposing their duplicity. These formulations absolve society of responsibility while placing the burden on Black communities to change.

When activists organized a citywide school boycott in February 1964, the Times repeatedly condemned it as a "violent, illegal approach of adult-encouraged truancy" and called civil rights demands "unreasonable and unjustified." In a scathing op-ed entitled "A Boycott Solves Nothing," the paper described the action as "reckless" and referred to activists as possessing a "stubbornly closed mind."
By contrast, when 10,000 white New Yorkers marched to defend segregated schools, the Times portrayed them sympathetically as preserving "the tradition of neighborhood schools." When 275,000 white parents boycotted limited desegregation plans that September, the paper criticized them only timidly, equating their actions with the earlier Black boycott and calling for an end to "boycotts, whether sponsored by white or Black."
Major news outlets consistently erased Black activism while adopting cultural explanations for inequality. When King increasingly connected racism, war, and poverty, these outlets grew more critical. After King's assassination, Harry Belafonte confronted a New York Times reporter, saying the "climate of hate and distortion" created by mainstream papers contributed to King's death.
Fifty years later, while some Southern papers have reassessed their civil rights coverage, Northern outlets like the New York Times and Boston Globe continue repeating past mistakes. The Times' 2015 coverage of school rezoning battles in New York City still naturalized white opposition while ignoring Black and Latino organizing, while the Globe's fortieth anniversary coverage of Boston desegregation focused on "busing" rather than the underlying segregation and decades of Black activism that preceded court orders.

Martin Luther King condemned the Vietnam War as a "cruel manipulation of the poor" that diverted resources from fighting poverty, calling America "the greatest purveyor of violence in the world." For this global vision, he was harshly criticized by mainstream media and civil rights organizations for not staying in his lane.
This expansive vision of racial justice-encompassing desegregation, criminal justice, economic justice, and global justice-has been deliberately removed from our public celebration of the movement. By reducing it to "a bus seat"-something palatable, narrow, and finished-the sanitized fable conveniently makes the movement less relevant for contemporary struggles and obscures its far-reaching challenge to American power structures at home and abroad.

National memorialization of the civil rights movement maintains a "great man" version of history that diminishes women's leadership. Born in 1927 in Marion, Alabama, Coretta Scott's childhood was marked by racial violence, including the burning of her home and her father's sawmill. As valedictorian at Lincoln High School, she went on to Antioch College where she became politically active in the NAACP, civil liberties committees, and peace activities. Notably, she "was more politically active at the time they met than Martin was."
Throughout her life, Scott King refused to be marginalized, declaring, "I am not a ceremonial symbol. I am an activist. I didn't just emerge after Martin died-I was always there and involved." After Martin's assassination, she expanded his legacy through her activism, linking opposition to war with economic justice at home as "two sides of the same coin."
In the 1970s, Scott King played a pivotal role in pushing for governmental guarantees for full employment. In the 1980s, she became active in the anti-apartheid movement, even getting arrested outside the South African embassy. She also became a vocal advocate for gay rights and same-sex marriage despite criticism from civil rights leaders and her own children, reminding Americans that "Martin Luther King Jr. said, 'Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.'"
The 1963 March on Washington exemplifies how women's crucial leadership was systematically marginalized. When Daisy Bates was given just 142 words to read-written by a man-it was a pledge that "women of this country" would "join hands with you" men leading the movement, despite these women having risked their lives for years advancing civil rights.
After the rally, no women were included in the delegation of ten leaders who met with President Kennedy. Dorothy Height observed, "I've never seen a more immovable force. Being an activist was not only lonely but often brought criticism from within one's own community and family. Multiple acts of bus resistance preceded Parks's stand, including Viola White's 1944 arrest (after which police retaliated by raping her daughter), Hilliard Brooks being killed by police in 1950 after refusing to reboard from the back, and Parks herself being thrown off buses previously. After Brown v. Board, Claudette Colvin and Mary Louise Smith were arrested in 1955, building community outrage that would make Parks's December arrest the breaking point.
Black anger finds little place in civil rights fables, with figures like King and Parks often portrayed as "not-angry." Activists filed countless affidavits with a Justice Department that looked away. Most Black Alabamians saw the NAACP as futile, with Parks noting there was "almost no way" to see progress. Yet they persisted because "someone had to do something."
This history isn't about inevitable triumph but about people who labored for decades in the wilderness-slurred, surveilled, and ignored-combining economic disruption, organizing, legal strategy, faith, and righteous anger in pursuit of goals far beyond bus seats. This more terrible but beautiful history shows us who will lead today: welfare mothers, high school students, church ladies, and ordinary people across America who pick up the burden of justice anew.
