Scapular dyskinesis is not an injury in itself, but rather a sign that the rhythm of your movement is off. It is like a drummer in a band who is just a half beat behind—it throws the whole song out of whack.

Scapular dyskinesis is not an injury itself but a sign that the rhythm of your shoulder movement is off. The scapula acts as a floating island of bone and the ultimate link connecting the arm to the trunk. When this connection becomes messy, it functions like a drummer who is a half-beat behind, throwing the entire movement of the body out of whack and potentially leading to further issues.
Research indicates that scapular dyskinesis is remarkably common in overhead athletes. For instance, up to 82 percent of pain-free swimmers showed signs of this off-beat movement by the end of just one training session. This suggests that the condition is often about how the body adapts, or fails to adapt, to physical demands rather than being a simple indicator of a pre-existing injury.
Subacromial Pain Syndrome, or SAPS, is a condition frequently encountered by clinicians and individuals dealing with shoulder pain. While it was long believed that simply fixing the scapula's position would resolve the pain, modern perspectives are rethinking shoulder movement. Understanding the complex web of muscles and the biomechanics of the scapula is essential for addressing the underlying causes of SAPS and improving functional movement.
