Orlando's history is the ultimate case study in reinvention—how a swampy interior with no navigable rivers and no natural easy access became a global crossroads.
The story of Orlando and Lake Nona, tracing Orlando's evolution from its cattle, citrus, railroad, and tourism roots into a modern metropolitan city, followed by the development of Lake Nona as a master-planned community focused on Medical City, airport-driven growth, innovation, wellness, and the future identity of southeast Orlando.

According to local legend, the city is named after Orlando Reeves, a sentinel who died during the Seminole Wars. While guarding his camp at Lake Minnie, Reeves spotted an ambush disguised as a drifting log and fired his weapon to warn his fellow soldiers. This story of sacrifice is one of four legends surrounding the naming of the city, reflecting its early history as a defensive frontier outpost.
Before it was known as Orlando, the first permanent settlement in the area was named Jernigan. It was named after the Jernigan family, who braved the rugged Florida wilderness to build a scattering of log cabins in the woods. This early settlement represented the beginning of a transformation from a swampy interior with no navigable rivers into the global crossroads and urban center that exists today.
Lake Nona represents the modern peak of Orlando's urban transformation, evolving from a frontier swamp into a seventeen-square-mile "living laboratory." Known as the Medical City, Lake Nona is currently regarded as the future of cities. It serves as a futuristic medical hub and a global crossroads, showcasing how the region has reinvented itself from nineteenth-century cattle hunting and citrus farming into a center for innovation.
