Les moines considéraient l'océan Atlantique comme un équivalent du désert, s'inspirant des ascètes d'Égypte qui s'isolaient dans le sable pour trouver Dieu. En s'installant sur ce rocher escarpé à 12 kilomètres des côtes, ils recherchaient un isolement radical et une forme de pénitence permanente.
