La solidité de ces structures repose sur une technique de construction précise appelée "pierre sèche". Étant donné que les routes secondaires et les "boreens" sont extrêmement étroites, suivre ce sens de circulation réduit considérablement le stress de la conduite et facilite les croisements avec les autres véhicules.
L'île de Valentia abrite l'une des traces de vie terrestre les plus anciennes au monde : des empreintes de tétrapodes fossilisées. Ces ancêtres des dinosaures ont laissé leurs marques dans la roche il y a environ 350 millions d'années, au moment où les premiers animaux sortaient de l'eau. En plus de ce trésor géologique, l'île propose la visite d'une ancienne carrière d'ardoise monumentale et d'un phare historique bâti sur les vestiges d'un fort de l'époque de Cromwell.
