To prevent a low-priority application from affecting a critical safety system, engineers use "Software Partitioning" based on the ARINC 653 standard. This creates logical isolation through "Time and Space Partitioning." ARINC standards act as the "grammar and vocabulary" that allow different pieces of electronic equipment from various manufacturers to communicate with one another. For example, ARINC 429 is a long-standing, highly reliable "one-way" communication protocol used for simple data like airspeed or fuel levels. Newer standards like ARINC 664 (AFDX) provide high-speed, "deterministic" Ethernet connections that guarantee bandwidth for critical data, while ARINC 818 handles high-resolution video for synthetic vision systems. These standards ensure that the entire digital nervous system of the plane is interoperable and safe.
Aviation software is developed under a rigorous international framework called DO-178C, which categorizes code into five Design Assurance Levels (DAL) based on the severity of a potential failure. For Level A software, where a failure would be catastrophic, engineers must satisfy 71 different safety objectives and prove there is no "dead code" that could cause unintended functions.
