The realization was both humbling and terrifying-that for all our mastery of the air, we remained at the mercy of forces beyond our control, dancing with death without knowing the steps.

The Weathered Veteran: When Numbers No Longer Matter

On an October night flight between Honolulu and the mainland, I flew alongside co-pilot Howe, a legendary aviator with seventeen thousand flight hours. Though Howe should have been a captain by experience, the numbers and circumstances had reduced this veteran-who had barnstormed in Jennies and flown mail with Lindbergh-to serving as my co-pilot. In the moonlight, Howe's face took on a statuelike quality, transforming from his usual mild-mannered appearance into the symbol of the hard-bitten veteran pilot. I saw in him the embodiment of aviation's history-helmet and goggles, fabric-covered wings, cow-pasture landings and loops over Sunday crowds. Most line pilots cultivate an almost psychopathic modesty, genuine but salted with humor. They never boast about perfect landings or precise instrument approaches. Instead, they downplay their skills with self-deprecating humor: "I barged around not knowing where I was... the ship landed itself." This false modesty is expected protocol. Yet beneath this facade, pilots wear courage like a comfortable belt, rarely giving it thought. They remain perpetually wary-a state that comes only from experience. After thousands of hours in the air, we had all seen colleagues vanish: Scroggins and Moore in a thunderstorm, Fey and Sandegren against Bountiful Peak, Abernathy and Holle at Laramie, Anderson and Miner at Richmond, Sprado and Weber at Mt. Laguna, Tansey and Sparrow at Shannon, Ham and Ring at Michigan City, Haskew and Canepa in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and many others. Contemplating Howe's long career and the many close calls with fate he must have experienced, I decided this moment marked my own time to quit flying. Howe seemed to understand. I later learned that Howe lived only a little longer, disappearing one day after rowing away from his boat in Ala Wai Harbor, Honolulu. During quiet moments in flight, pilots often dream of escaping to cabins in mountains or quiet farms-places where fate would seldom be a partner. Looking in the mirror during that flight, I saw my face had grown too old for a copilot, resembling my worn canvas flight bag with its calloused handle and tear that would never heal. My logbook now showed almost ten thousand flying hours-numbers that represented more than time; they recorded marrows frozen and melted, courage drained and replenished, and ability to act in fear. They announced we were solid citizens of the skies, if not yet true aristocrats. Above all, they declared our luck had been exceedingly good. But luck, like fuel, eventually runs out. For every pilot who grows old enough to tell their stories, countless others join that solemn dedication at the book's beginning: "To these old comrades with wings... forever folded." Fate is indeed the hunter, and though some may elude it longer than others, in the end, it claims us all. The only question is whether we face it with the quiet dignity of those who have danced with death and learned its rhythms-men like Howe, who carried aviation's entire history in the weathered lines of his face, and who chose, in the end, to meet fate on his own terms.
